Lake Hugh Muntz

Some great news!

Results from recent water quality sampling indicates that the algae levels in Lake Hugh Muntz have dropped below the Amber Alert Level (0.4 mm3/L) and the lake is now in the Green Surveillance Mode.

The Green Surveillance Mode is indicative of a waterbody with very low algae concentration.

This is a positive outcome considering the amount of rainfall that has occurred since the 2021 PhoslockTM application.

Dot points of the Change

  • This change in alert level comes after considerable research and community engagement over the last five years.
  • Although the current alert level is in the surveillance mode, care should still be taken prior to using the lake for recreational purposes.
  • Do not use the lake if there is visible scum, or until 3 days after rainfall or if the water looks discoloured.
  • The City has invested in stormwater improvements, catchment management, in-lake plantings and Phoslock applications.
  • These investments are striving towards a healthy ecosystem that can be enjoyed by all.
  • It is unknown how long the lake will remain in the surveillance mode, algal blooms are highly dependent on environmental factors.
