Dear Eagles,

My student affairs picks include (but are not limited to) Fresh Check Mental Health Awareness Day, BRAVE Conversations, and a performance by the BC Wind Ensemble.

This week also kicks off celebrating BC's First Generation Students through Learning to Learn's First Gen Week beginning with a tailgate on Friday and a photo campaign.

Be sure to also check out our academics section including an STM speaker engagement featuring Sr. Nathalie Becquart, XMCJ, and the Lowell Humanities Series featuring author, Heather McGee.

Finally, Halloween is almost here!  Keep a lookout for programming from the Residential House Association and CAB including the Haunted Lawn on October 28.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shawna Cooper Whitehead

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee presented by BC Dramatics Society

An eclectic group of six
mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.

Heather McGhee: The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone
and How We Can Prosper Together

What if, in the middle of your live TV appearance, someone asked for advice on overcoming racial prejudice? For Heather McGhee, the response was natural: she helped. Her deeply personal experiences come together in The Sum Of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together. An analysis of how we arrived at this divided nation, The Sum of Us illuminates how racism is at the root of some of our most vexing public problems, from collapsing infrastructure to rising student debt.
