Queenstown Lakes District Council

QLDC Winter Road Report - 23 September 2023

Morning greetings Queenstown Lakes,

I'm sure many of us are pleased to see a calming of the storms for Saturday. The regions forecast is for a mostly cloudy day with isolated showers, clearing to fine in the evening.

A big shout out to all those who have been working around the clock to support our communities and the crews who have helped keep the traffic moving - you are awesome 😍. Thanks to those who have lent a helping hand, checked in on a friend or neighbour and kept spirits up with a kind word. It makes a difference.

Let's get into this morning's conditions as we continue on the road to recovery.:

  • Crown Range Road & Cardrona Valley:  Roads are open. Grit and Plough Trucks are currently patrolling the Crown Range Road to clear the light dusting of snow has fallen. Low temperatures and damp roads mean there is a possibility of ice so drive with care.
  • Wānaka area: Dry roads with cooler temperatures. Mount Aspiring Road closed at Glenfinnan Bluffs. SH6 Makarora remains closed.
  • Queenstown and Whakatipu Basin: . Road closures remain for Isle Street and Brecon Street Intersection, Huff Street, Reavers Lane and Hamilton Road. Glenorchy-Queenstown Road remains closed between One Mile roundabout and Sunshine Bay with detour via Fernhill Road. Dry roads elsewhere and lower temperatures.
  • Glenorchy: Dry roads with cooler temperatures. Greenstone Station Road and Paradise Road remain closed.
  • Out of district: Some snow has fallen overnight in the Lindis  Pass which has been cleared and the road has been gritted. Wet roads across the network, watch for surface flooding between Cromwell and Wānaka.

Drive safely and slowly and give yourself some extra travel time as the clean up continues. Some roads still may have minor surface flooding areas, washouts and minor slips affecting them.

Please continue to find up to date information throughout the day for weather affected roads on our QLDC website here along with live updates posted via our Facebook page.

Remember if you spot any issues or hazardous conditions on a road, please report it to QLDC by phoning 03 441 0499.

Something a little lighter to wrap up today's report.

DISCLAIMER:  Road conditions during winter can change at any time. Our advice is to always carry chains, slow down and drive to the conditions. We will always do our best to give you the most up-to-date conditions for key commuter roads, but we can't drive every road in the district before 7.00am.  Remember, if it's snowing, this slows us down too and these reports should never replace common sense.
