Cr Matthew Blackmore, Mayor of Strathfield

I’m pleased to inform residents that the newly built Homebush West Community Centre will soon be available for hire. This exciting new community space can seat up to 100 in the main hall, and 40 in the function room. With its light filled rooms, it’s the perfect place for meetings, play groups, Christenings, and any other events. Stay tuned to the eNews for more info.

I would like to recognise those in our community celebrating Deepavali this month. Deepavali is one of the biggest celebrations which celebrates the festival of lights. It symbolises the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. It’s a message of hope, friendship, and spreading peace.  We extend our warmest regards to residents celebrating this occasion and again, wish them a Happy Deepavali!

Protect our waterways

La Niña is sticking around which should see us receive more than typical rainfall up until early 2023. Let’s be extra vigilant this end of year to ensure our stormwater remains as pollutant-free as possible.

Unlike sewage, this water isn’t treated before it heads to our waterways, and it can be very harmful for our aquatic flora and fauna. Learn how you can make a difference here.

George Kerslake’s Gardens

It’s Springtime! The Strathfield district has long boasted spectacular gardens. During the 1880s and 1890s Alderman von der Heyde employed Strathfield’s best gardener, George Kerslake at Elwood House in Albert Road. Kerslake regularly won the honours at the many horticultural shows, bred new varieties of flowers including cactus dahlias, bouvadias, chrysanthemums, carnations, roses and penstemons, and was once described as ‘the most successful of flower hybridists in Australia.’ However, the family suffered great tragedy in January 1897 when his three sons were drowned in a waterhole of the Cooks River at Druitt Town, now Strathfield South.
