Protect our waterways La Niña is sticking around which should see us receive more than typical rainfall up until early 2023. Let’s be extra vigilant this end of year to ensure our stormwater remains as pollutant-free as possible. Unlike sewage, this water isn’t treated before it heads to our waterways, and it can be very harmful for our aquatic flora and fauna. Learn how you can make a difference here. The Strathfield district has long boasted spectacular gardens. During the 1880s and 1890s Alderman von der Heyde employed Strathfield’s best gardener, George Kerslake at Elwood House in Albert Road. Kerslake regularly won the honours at the many horticultural shows, bred new varieties of flowers including cactus dahlias, bouvadias, chrysanthemums, carnations, roses and penstemons, and was once described as ‘the most successful of flower hybridists in Australia.’ However, the family suffered great tragedy in January 1897 when his three sons were drowned in a waterhole of the Cooks River at Druitt Town, now Strathfield South. The portrait once hung in the herbarium of the Royal Botanical Gardens and featured on the front cover of The Amateur Gardener after his death.
