Over the past two months, our researchers have continued to strengthen their presence across media, research, and international collaborations. A significant highlight is new international funding secured by UCT’s Nanoelectronics Group from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) for research on a spin-controlled single electron pump. The project brings together partners from the University of Cambridge, University College London, and the University of Cape Coast, combining expertise in quantum devices, nanofabrication, and semiconductor physics, and underscoring growing international recognition of local expertise. In the media, our researchers continue to contribute to public conversations on quantum science. Dr Isaac Nape and Prof. Tjaart Krüger were featured on Talk Radio 702, sharing insights into quantum science and its relevance in South Africa’s innovation landscape. Research output remains strong, with several new publications. A recent highlight from scientists at the University of Witwatersrand and the University of East Anglia reveals a hidden property of light that allows it to twist, spin and behave differently - without mirrors, materials or special lenses.
