WHO’s top-level advisory body for malaria will convene virtually for its next meeting on 8–10 April. Members of the Malaria Policy Advisory Group (MPAG) will hear updates on the implementation of the 2024 Yaoundé Declaration, vector control operational guidance, coordination of the response to antimalarial drug resistance in Africa, and zoonotic malaria, among other topics. Following a nearly century-long effort, Georgia has been certified malaria-free by WHO. The certification is granted when a country has proven, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the chain of indigenous malaria transmission has been interrupted nationwide for at least 3 consecutive years. Georgia joins the ranks of 45 countries and 1 territory that have achieved this milestone.
WHO is seeking experts to serve as members of its Vector Control Advisory Group (VCAG). This “call for experts” provides information about the advisory group in question, the expert profiles being sought, the process to express interest, and the selection criteria. The deadline for applications is 15 April 2025.
In January 2024, Cameroon kicked off a wave of ground-breaking malaria vaccine introductions across Africa, integrating the malaria vaccine into the childhood immunization programmes across 42 high-burden districts. One year on, early reports from health facilities and communities indicate positive impacts. Malaria immunization efforts in Cameroon are complemented by other preventive measures, such as preventive treatment and the use of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets.
WHO has prequalified the first diagnostic test for G6PD deficiency, marking a significant milestone in facilitating safe and effective P. vivax malaria treatment.
P. vivax is the dominant malaria parasite in most countries outside of sub-Saharan Africa, with an estimated 9.2 million cases in 2023.
Clear, evidence-informed WHO recommendations are designed to guide countries as they develop national malaria strategic plans. All of the Organization’s most up-to-date recommendations on malaria are available through a web-based platform and a mobile app. The Global Malaria Programme also publishes a list of upcoming guidance on its website, updated quarterly.
