Meaningful work for young people and a cleaner environment - that’s the plan
This month, we’re taking a look at how we’re supporting young people to access education and employment in Gippsland as well as checking out what’s going on around the region.
Young people and a sustainable future are two of the priorities within Gippsland 2035's
Latrobe Valley and Gippsland Transition Plan

Catching Up With Gen Gippsland

Celebrating Tanisha's Step Up success

Tanisha hated school. She was disengaged from the work and ready to quit when her teachers gave her an ultimatum: enrol in Ladder's Step Up program or get expelled.

After six weeks of intensive mentorship through Step Up Latrobe Valley, Tanisha graduated as 'Best on Ground' and is now racing towards a career in midwifery - a goal her Ladder mentors will continue to support her with.

A great start to a future in domestic building

Hayley and Izzabelle are recent graduates of the Gippsland Trades & Labour Council (GTLC) Domestic Building Starter Program.

Neither had any idea about construction and trades at the start, but in the two weeks of the program they earned their white card, working at heights, and confined spaces qualifications.

Chatterboxing away at the
CCG Open Day

We had a great time chatting with students about job opportunities in Gippsland's renewable energy sector at the Community College Gippsland (CCG) Open Day.

LVA's Jules Cole hit the ground with colourful chatterboxes to help break down barriers and spark conversation and find out what was important to these young people.

Renewable Energy and Sustainability

Bioenergy - the next big thing?

Gippsland’s got gold. It’s not the shiny sort but it does have the potential to be extremely valuable to the region’s future.

The recent Gippsland Bioenergy Forum, hosted by the Victorian Bioenergy Network and the LVA,  brought together a mix of finance experts, scientists, renewable energy specialists, government, and industry - local, national and international, big and small - providing insight into the untapped potential for Victorian manufacturers and for regional development.

Learnings from Denmark

With bioenergy already in play in Gippsland, the forum heard bioenergy experts from Denmark which, roughly 15 years ahead of Australia in this space, is on track to be producing 100% clean gas by 2030.

Gippsland Circular Economy Hub

The wheels are turning as Gippsland journeys towards a Circular Economy. That’s why the LVA is pleased to be helping to set up the Gippsland Circular Economy Hub.

The Hub brings together businesses, industry, community groups, government, researchers, and educators. and will work together to identify and action Circular Economy projects and initiatives in the region.

Gippsland Innovation Breakfast

The Circular Economy was also the focus of April’s Gippsland Innovation Breakfast where a number of locals including Federation University, Latrobe Valley Enterprises, and Food and Fibre Gippsland shared their insights, research and achievements so far in this space.

Focus on Vertical Farming

Looking at farming from a different angle

Food and Fibre Gippsland and the LVA have been working in partnership to investigate the benefit of establishing a controlled environment agriculture (vertical farming) facility in Gippsland.

With Gippsland home to some of the largest horticulture operations in Australia and having access to significant renewable energy supplies, this project is looking to understand if the vertical method of farming would provide climate resilience and additional capacity to existing growers and it will also help to determine whether growers have an interest in utilising the technology.
