Queenstown Lakes District Council

QLDC Winter Road Report - 20 September 2023

Ata Mārie Good Morning Queenstown Lakes,

I've been told it's  either raining, just stopped or about to start out there today.  I've also been advised to batten down the hatches over the coming days due to strong wind and heavy rain warnings.  It's looking like the weathers going to go from moody to having a full blown tantrum soon.

There is a good chance of a lot of snow on the Crown Range over the next few days. Keep an eye out for the latest forecasts, keep those chain ready in the car boot and plan your journeys accordingly.

Do take care out there, slow down in areas of bad weather and drive safely.

Here's a summary of conditions to be aware of today:

  • Crown Range Road & Cardrona Valley:  Wet roads and positive temperatures.
  • Wānaka area: Mix of damp and dry roads with positive temperatures.
  • Queenstown and Whakatipu Basin: Damp roads with mild temperatures.
  • Glenorchy: Wet roads and positive temperatures.
  • Out of district: Wet roads most places today with rain falling and mild temperatures, up to a balmy 12 degrees in Lindis Pass.

Now the following could be classified as a Dad joke (or one that some Dad’s don’t like to joke about?!)

What do you call ten rabbits hopping backward in the snow?
A receding hare line.

As always, get in touch if you come across any issues on the roads by dialling 03 441 0499.

Happy humpday,
Tessa

DISCLAIMER:  Road conditions during winter can change at any time. Our advice is to always carry chains, slow down and drive to the conditions. We will always do our best to give you the most up-to-date conditions for key commuter roads, but we can't drive every road in the district before 7.00am.  Remember, if it's snowing, this slows us down too and these reports should never replace common sense.
