Midlands councils in EV charging boost

Midlands Connect have launched a new tool to help councils plan electric vehicle charging points.

The tool analyses data about residents such as:
•    Access to public transport
•    Current electric vehicle uptake
•    Levels of deprivation
•    Proportion of households with no access to off-road parking

With the tool, local authorities will more easily be able to identify the most suitable sites for adding more EV charging points.

It is estimated that the Midlands needs more than 17 thousand new public EV charging points by 2025 to keep in line with growing demand.

Five Midlands Councils to receive funding for EV charging points

The success of a bid submitted in June.

Back in June, Midlands Connect led five local authorities in a joint bit for almost £1m government funding for electric vehicle chargepoints. It has now been announced that we won the funding!

The bid was led by Lincolnshire County Council and includes Herefordshire Council, Leicestershire County Council, Rutland County Council, and Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

The funding will provide 322 standard and 27 rapid EV charging points across the Midlands, with the main target for locations being areas with lower levels of off-street parking.

One week to go to fill in rail improvement survey!

Businesses have just one week to have their say on improvement's to the Shrewsbury - Black Country - Birmingham route

The survey, which can be found here, follows our research from the Rails to Recovery report from last year.

Our research found that electrifying the route through Telford and the Black Country and extending London services to Shrewsbury could create up to £500 million of benefits for businesses and residents by making the trains hourly to London from Shrewsbury.

We are urging businesses to complete this short survey, which will support our future strategy along this route.

This survey will close on Monday 5th September 2022, and only takes a few minutes to complete.

HGV delays are costing operators £1 per minute

The figure comes from Midlands Connect's 'Freight Routemap'

The 'Freight Routemap' report outlines the plans and priorities for freight across the Midlands.

336,000 people were employed in the transportation and storage sectors in the Midlands.

Improving freight in the region can benefit the following policy areas:

  • Economy: By facilitating efficient movement of goods to/from/around the region;
  • Environment: By supporting the industry to meet its carbon targets and ambitions;
  • People: By providing us with the goods and materials that we all need as well as improving air quality, reducing noise and improving local road safety.
