Message From The Chancellor

As the end of the academic year nears, we are excited to welcome our next prospective class of scholars to UC San Diego. We greeted over 150 students and their family members at this year’s Chancellor’s Associates Scholars Program induction ceremonies in April — designed to congratulate new scholars and introduce them to campus before they commit to UC San Diego.

Your contributions have played a pivotal role in the success of our Chancellor’s Associates Scholars — and our Student Support and Success initiative. Since 2013, we have awarded more than 1,800 Chancellor’s Associates Scholarships, an 800 percent increase since the program’s inception. These scholars not only receive financial support, they also benefit from comprehensive services designed to ensure their success at UC San Diego and beyond.

With the close of the Campaign for UC San Diego just a couple of months away, we have the opportunity to expand support for our Chancellor’s Associates Scholars even further, thanks to several complementary challenge programs. In conjunction with the Chancellor’s Scholarship and Fellowship Challenge, eligible current use gifts may receive a special 1:1 match up to $667,000, while endowed gifts may receive an additional 1:4 match up to $1 million.

Thank you for helping us level the playing field for all our exceptional aspiring learners.

With kind regards,

Pradeep K. Khosla
Chancellor

Message From Your Chancellor's Associates Chair

Now in its fourth year, UC San Diego’s Day of Caring — u.care — will begin on Thursday, May 13 at 6 a.m. and run for 1,960 minutes in honor of our founding year. We are asking the global Triton community to reflect on the experiences that change students’ lives and help to pay it forward. This year, I hope you’ll join me in making an additional gift — of any size — in support of our Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship. Encourage your friends, family and personal network to participate and make this year the most successful Day of Caring yet!

With Triton Pride,

Jerrilyn Malana ’86

Jay Wilson '22

Meet Our Scholar
Jay Wilson '22

For many students, receiving the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship provides more than a sense of relief from financial pressures — it offers unlimited opportunities. Instead of worrying about how they are going to pay for their education, students have the flexibility to explore and experience different opportunities and interests. “Over the past four years at UC San Diego, I have worked a number of student employee positions within Student Affairs such as being a Muir Orientation Leader, a CASP101 intern, and now as a Muir Housing Advisor,” shares Chancellor’s Associates Scholar, Jay Wilson ’22.

The scholarship is also a source of comfort for parents and families. Jay noted that with his scholarship, his parents were able to direct their attention to helping his siblings achieve their dreams. “My parents and my siblings are some of my biggest supporters and my most important role models, so the fact that I was able to alleviate some of the pressures of college with the CASP scholarship was a huge relief for everyone.”

When asked what advice he would pass along to incoming CASP scholars, Jay was quick to reply. “I hope that future CASP students are able to recognize the privilege that this scholarship gives them and take full advantage of the opportunity and try new things — live out their life in a healthy balance of academic success, professional skill development, and socializing with their peers.” Learn more about our other scholars.

Stuart Madison '18

Meet Our GOLD CASP Supporter
Stuart Madison '18

As one of eight children, Stuart Madison ’18 knew he would have to pave his own path to future success. In 2016, Stuart received a Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship to UC San Diego, launching his loan-free academic career as a Triton transfer student. With the financial help from the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship, he was able to focus more deeply on curating a college experience that would help him follow his dreams. He remembers, “There is no way I would have had the full college experience if I had needed to work part-time and spend time commuting each day. The scholarship allowed me to just go for it and have that ultimate freedom.”

The Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship also created a strong network of emotional support, shares Stuart, “CASP was also a great source of friends, socializing, support and general guidance. I still talk to friends I made on the first day of CASP 101.” He was able to thrive socially due to the program and connect with other first-generation scholars with equally big goals. When he needed mentorship or other assistance, Stuart would often find himself in the CASP office, either strategizing on passing a class or sharing his wins with the student and team staff.

His advice for current and incoming scholars? “As Chancellor’s Associates scholars you have the opportunity to prove that a program like this helps build something bigger than just academic success and graduating college. It presents built-in opportunities — so go out there and pursue that research opportunity instead of working part-time; live on campus instead of miles away; take those extra classes to see if you want that second major; do that summer internship instead of taking community college classes to save money in the fall. And if you still need to break down and cry, I'm sure someone in the CASP office would help dry your tears.”

Stuart currently works in computational linguistics with text-to-speech technology at Apple in San Francisco and is one of our celebrated founding nine Chancellor’s Associates GOLD match donors. Learn more about our other supporters.

Things to Consider as You Plan Your 2022 Charitable Gifts

While Congress contemplates changes to tax laws that may affect charitable giving, here are a few ways to support Chancellor’s Associates that won’t change:

  • Making gifts of appreciated securities — and avoiding all capital gains — is as beneficial as ever. It’s easy to transfer securities directly to the UC San Diego Foundation and you will receive a tax deduction for the full market value.
  • If you are at least 70.5, making a qualified charitable distribution from your IRA is a great way to give regardless of whether you itemize. Your qualified charitable deductions is not included in your reportable taxable income and, if you are at least 72, your QCD counts toward your required minimum distribution.
  • For those who itemize, cash gifts are deductible at 60 percent of adjusted gross income. For those who don’t, you can enable itemizing by bundling gifts you are planning to make over several years into one gift this year.

If you have questions about these tips or want to discuss other creative options for your charitable giving, please contact Kim Wenrick at (858) 762-2099 or at kwenrick@ucsd.edu.
