Message From Your Chancellor's Associates Chair Later this month, our Chancellor’s Associates Scholars will be starting their last quarter of the academic year. Due to the pandemic, this past year was an anomaly with our scholars attending classes online and only 2% of classes held in person last quarter. We hope to return physically to the classrooms in the fall, and UC San Diego Health’s two vaccination superstations, one of which is located on campus, will help to make this happen. It has been inspiring to see thousands of student and Triton community members who have signed up to volunteer at these vaccination superstations. Witnessing the perseverance and altruism of our scholars and community makes me so proud of our Triton family. Thank you for your continued support of our Chancellor's Associates program. You are making a tangible difference in the lives of our scholars, and changing the trajectory of their growth in a positive way. With Triton Pride, Jerrilyn Malana ’86 Service, Pride & Inclusion Congratulations to Chancellor’s Associates Scholar Syreeta Nolan ’21 Last month, Chancellor’s Associates Scholar Syreeta Nolan ’21 was honored as the campus-wide student recipient of this year’s Inclusive Excellence Awards. The annual Inclusive Excellence awards honors staff, faulty, students departments and org groups or units that make outstanding contributions to areas of inclusion, equity, diversity and the UC San Diego Principles of Community during the year. Said Syreeta about receiving the award, “As a disabled student, I never planned to be a disability advocate. It was my first quarter in Fall 2019 when living on the 11th floor of a tower in Seventh College that I was told to just leave before the fire drill since I couldn't walk down 11 floors and up another 3 flights of stairs that motivated me. I felt excluded and disposable as disabled students, like me, had no plan in case of an emergency. Receiving this award means that I am included and valued in leading the campus to a place where the entire disability community can feel included and valued.” Syreeta was honored for her disability advocacy work at UC San Diego, but also within the UC System in her role as Underrepresented Student Officer. Some of her projects at UC San Diego included advocacy for a disability studies minor, planning for the installation of an art monument to celebrate the disability community, inclusion of disability in the orientation programs of colleges and transforming how we speak about disability within syllabi. She also co-founded a UC System-wide Disability Ad Hoc committee, which represents all 10 campuses with over 100 disabled undergraduate and graduate students. Congratulations Syreeta! __________________________________ IDEA Center 10th Anniversary This academic year, marks the 10th Anniversary of the IDEA Engineering Student Center, one of the cornerstones of student life at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering. In the past decade, the IDEA— Inclusion, Diversity, Excellence, Achievement—Engineering Student Center has supported thousands of students through to graduation through its various programs, including summer prep and mentorship programs, peer-led engineering learning communities, support for student diversity organizations and more. The IDEA Center has also been integral in providing academic and peer support for students traditionally underrepresented in engineering and computer science including Black, Latinx and Native American students, women, first generation college students, LGBTQ+ students and low-income students. Volunteer Opportunity: Admissions Calling Campaign We need your help! The Admissions Calling Campaign provides an opportunity for members of the UC San Diego community to call admitted students, share "Why UC San Diego," answer questions about the campus, encourage participation in virtual yield activities and put UC San Diego top of mind as a first-choice university. This is a great way to encourage more admitted first-gen and underrepresented students to attend UC San Diego. Sign up to volunteer here. It’s Easy to Support Chancellor’s Associates with a Gift of Life Insurance Life insurance is an important financial tool for your family, but when its original purpose no longer applies—your children are educated, your finances are secure—your policy can become a powerful charitable tool as well. The two most common ways to support Chancellor’s Associates with a gift of life insurance are: · Name UC San Diego/Chancellor’s Associates at the primary beneficiary for a percentage or specific amount, or as a contingent beneficiary; · Name UC San Diego/Chancellor’s Associates as the owner of an existing policy. You receive a tax deduction the year you make the gift and if there are premiums due, your annual gifts in that amount to UC San Diego are also tax deductible. To learn more about this charitable giving idea or for answers to any planned gift question, please contact Kim Wenrick in the Office of Gift Planning at kwenrick@ucsd.edu. __________________________________ Virtual Events & Resources We strongly encourage you to engage with the myriad of events sponsored by our campus partners throughout the year.
