  Western Cape connecting the dots

Connect and collaborate: Seen above are Western Cape education officials, research specialists and NGOs who met last week at NASCEE’s networking event in Cape Town. The message from all involved was: “Let’s collaborate to use data to impact education – we’re stronger together”.

Machine learning – up next!
The new DDD Promotions Prediction Report rolls out in June. It uses machine learning to predict year-end promotion rates, and is the first fully automated machine learning feature on DDD. Watch this space!

  TIP #1: PROFILE WITH PRECISION

Download your school’s FET Promotion Profiles Report to see who “Did Not Achieve” and why. Use Term 1 data to intervene and prevent Gr12 failures in Term 2.

Log in now to find it on the DDD Reports page.
    TIP #2: PROFILE TO PERFORM

Get to know your learners by name and need, using the DDD Learner Chart Report. Track their performance and identify learners at risk before Term 2 ends.

Log in now to find it on the DDD Reports page.

TIP #3: TRACK ATTRITION

Use the Attrition Info Report to see which grades are experiencing unusual gains or losses in learner numbers, and to obtain projections to help with your planning.

Log in now to find it on the DDD Reports page.

  “WHEN DATA LEADS, LEARNERS THRIVE!”

DBE Mentorship is the not-so-secret ingredient in the recipe for better learner outcomes (see DataPoint # 61).

DBE Mentor, Ms Tidimalo Nkotoe
, shares the following advice for making data part of your learner support journey:

USE THE DDD DASHBOARD TO:

Watch: Attendance data to see who is absent, when and how often.
Why: Once addressed, you minimise lost learning and improve class morale.
Do: Explore the causes with empathy; conduct wellness checks and home visits; put a recovery/re-engagement plan in place.

Watch: Overage learners (older than the expected grade age); and understand who they are.
Why: You can tackle low confidence, disengagement and high risk of dropout.
Do: Promote inclusion; implement bridging programmes, flexible pacing and emotional support.

Watch:
Learner information, to identify gaps, delays or learning barriers.
Why: To minimise the risk of a learner falling further behind or dropping out.
Do: Plan targeted, needs-based teaching; grouping and catch-up plans.

Watch: Educator information, to check qualifications and development needs.
Why: This directly impacts teaching quality and therefore learner outcomes.
Do: Affirm strengths; provide tailored professional support and peer mentoring; celebrate progress.

SCHOOL MANAGEMENT REDEFINED: LEADING TO LEARN

At Harmony Hill Primary in Mpumalanga, Principal Vinolia Mokoena is transforming how data drives school leadership – putting learners at the heart of every decision. “The DDD Dashboard gives a deeper analysis of each learner and calls for an individualised intervention process,” Mokoena explains. With this powerful tool, she delivers precise, differentiated support, pinpointing learners who need urgent attention based on their performance, age, or attendance patterns.

But her approach goes further. Mokoena uses the dashboard to profile educators and allocate subjects strategically. “I can track an educator’s performance through DDD. It shows me where they’ll make the biggest difference,” she says. Every placement becomes purposeful, guided by real-time insights that match teacher strengths to learner needs. The dashboard also helps her anticipate subject-level performance trends, enabling early intervention before results decline. Teachers are better prepared too, with clear insights into the learners they’ll teach – whether progressed, overaged, or high achieving.

Mokoena says she especially values the comparative lens DDD provides. She can assess each learner holistically, considering age, progress and attendance, to design the right intervention. A progressed learner with chronic absenteeism, for example, needs a very different approach than others.

By turning data into decisive action, Principal Mokoena is not just managing a school. She’s shaping brighter futures, one learner at a time.
