Chancellor's Associates
Message From Your Chancellor's Associates Chair

David Buccigrossi Headshot

Spring at UC San Diego means the return of our Day of Caring, u.care. On May 11 and 12, the global Triton community is coming together to raise funds and awareness for the causes we are most passionate about, including student scholarships.

Last year we received more than 4,000 gifts during u.care. Collective giving on this scale makes a lasting impact on scholars and our community for generations to come. We invite you to show your support by sharing on social media why you’re passionate about Chancellor’s Associates and tagging it #UCSDcares.

In addition to u.care, we hope you can make it to our Chancellor’s Associates Colloquium on May 3 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at the Faculty Club. Professor Pascal Gagneux will be discussing the origins of homo sapiens and what makes us human. It should be fascinating and entertaining. We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

David E. Buccigrossi ’79, MD ’84

Meet Our Alumni

Laritza Bahena Hernandez ’26

Laritza Bahena Hernandez’s Journey to Los Angeles

As a first-year Chancellor’s Associates scholar and first-generation Latina student, I was honored to represent CASP at the UC San Diego Regional Celebration in Los Angeles. It was an important opportunity for me to acknowledge the wonderful resources on campus, such as the Office for Students with Disabilities, that have helped me navigate my first year.

I had the chance to share my story with the Triton community, and my family got to be a part of this extraordinary experience. From meeting Chancellor Khosla to watching Nathan East ’78 perform to viewing the incredible Grammy Museum exhibits, this will always be a special UC San Diego memory for me and my family.

Are You Globally-Minded And Interested in Meeting International Visitors and Helping Them Improve Their English Conversation Fluency?

The UC San Diego International Students and Programs Office’s English-in-Action (EIA) Conversation Program is looking for Chancellor’s Associates volunteers who would enjoy meeting with an international student, scholar or spouse to assist them in improving their English conversation skills and share American culture.

Participating in EIA is rewarding because it provides considerable cultural insight and a deeper appreciation for diversity, which helps students gain a greater respect and appreciation for other cultures.

Knowledge of foreign languages or teaching experience is not required. EIA volunteers attend an orientation session and have access to International Students and Programs Office materials and resources. Conversation leaders can work with participants individually or in small groups and typically meet for an hour or two each week at a location that is convenient for both, including remote, on campus or off campus.

Apply or learn more, or email Shelly Taskin with questions.

In Memory of John C. Meyers, MD

John C. Meyers, MD, passed away peacefully on February 16 at age 98. A UC San Diego supporter and School of Medicine volunteer for more than 50 years, John was a dedicated member of Chancellor’s Associates and the UC San Diego Visitors Program. He was among the first doctors in the community to become a volunteer faculty member in reproductive medicine, teaching students and residents the best practices for delivering babies with the most desirable outcomes for mother and child. A retired OB-GYN practitioner, John and his wife Betty Joan Maly, MD, taught a volunteer-led preclinical elective, The Healer’s Art, for medical students. He will be profoundly missed. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, May 27. For more information, read here.

About Chancellor’s Associates:

We believe in proactive philanthropy — the kind that breaks boundaries and levels the playing field for motivated learners. We are a community of supporters including alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends who partner with Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla to address UC San Diego’s most urgent priority: broadening access to higher education. Since 2013, more than 2,000 Chancellor’s Associates scholarships have been awarded to high-achieving, deserving students who are often the first in their families to attend college. Together, we change lives. Learn more at chancellorsassociates.ucsd.edu.
