Chancellor's Associates
Message From Your Chancellor's Associates Chair

David Buccigrossi Headshot

As the year comes to a close, I feel such deep gratitude for the incredible impact Chancellor’s Associates like you have made on our scholars. Since 2013, CASP has provided more than 2,500 high-achieving students with full scholarships, academic support services, and mentorship resources to ensure they thrive at UC San Diego and beyond.

You’ll have the chance to meet these scholars throughout the year at colloquiums where we’ll engage in discussion about leading-edge research and issues impacting education today. I hope to see you there.

As you choose which causes to give back to in this season of giving, bear in mind that your generosity is the reason many students have the resources they need to excel at UC San Diego. This world-class educational experience creates change in their families and communities for generations to come. I hope you’ll support UC San Diego with a tax-deductible gift to Chancellor’s Associates so scholars can explore new possibilities for a thriving future.

Sincerely,

David E. Buccigrossi ’79, MD ’84

Sharing my Chancellor's Associates Scholar Journey

I’m Oscar Guzman, the Alumni Board of Directors Chancellor’s Associates Scholar. I am a first-generation college student who was the first in my family to graduate high school. I will also be the first to receive a bachelor's degree and hope to attend law school.

This September, I spoke at the UC San Diego event in Washington, D.C. Having the opportunity to travel to our nation’s capital to represent the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship Program (CASP) was an honor. It’s just one of the many opportunities the program has afforded me, which include working as a peer mentor for incoming CASP students and participating in internships that provide me hands-on experiences as I prepare for my future.

Thank you, Chancellor’s Associates. Your support has provided an example for me, and I plan to pay your generosity forward as an alumnus.

Introducing Others to Chancellor’s Associates Scholarships

Subert Wong and Jing Wang have been UC San Diego supporters since their eldest daughter’s freshman year in 2017. Wong is the chief operating officer at New Century Insurance. He saw how a planned gift would support CASP, so he established the New Century Insurance Service Endowed Scholarship.

Wong introduced Omar Ahmad, the regional sales manager at AmTrust North America, a partner of New Century Insurance, to UC San Diego and encouraged the company to support CASP. New Century Insurance team members Angela Tseng, Joe Lopez Jr. and Michelle Shen joined Ahmad on a campus visit to meet current CASP scholars and present a $5,000 gift from AmTrust North America. Wong hopes that this is just the beginning of AmTrust’s relationship with UC San Diego.

Qualified Charitable Distributions: an Easy Way to Support Chancellor’s Associates

If you are at least 70 1/2 years of age, there is a simple way for you to support Chancellor’s Associates. You can make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD), including a distribution made to satisfy a pledge, from your IRA. QCDs are not included in your reportable taxable income, so it does not matter whether you itemize your taxes.

If you have a required minimum distribution (RMD), a QCD will count for some or all of that requirement. Because your 2024 RMD will be calculated based in part on your IRA’s value at the end of 2023, a QCD can help you manage your finances next year, including your annual Medicare contributions

Please let us know if you are making a QCD so we can be sure your gift is credited properly. Contact Kim Wenrick in the Office of Gift Planning at kwenrick@ucsd.edu with questions about QCDs or any other planned gift.
