Unpaid Family Caregiving for People who Use Drugs in Rural Canada: Community Report
Access to evidence-based health and social services is crucial for supporting people who use drugs. In many rural communities, access to these services is challenging and families often step in to fill the gap. Despite the important role of families, very little is known about these experiences when providing care to people who use drugs in rural settings. This community-based research, led by Dr. Holly Mathias (Assistant Professor, Department of Human Ecology and former School of Public Health PhD student under the supervision of CHC Scientist Dr. Elaine Hyshka), explores the experiences of 31 family members in rural Western Canada, including their care activities, impacts of care on the caregiver and other family members, and their perceptions of supports needed for both families and people who use drugs in rural settings.
