2022 Global Humanitarian Overview

On 2 December 2021, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) launched the 2022 Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO) with the theme "Climate Change and Humanitarian Action". A total of 274 million people worldwide will need emergency aid and protection in 2022, a 17 per cent increase compared to last year’s GHO. The 2022 GHO estimates that US$41 billion is required to provide relief and protection to the 183 million people most in need and covered by the plans.

The Health Cluster Dashboard reflects  data as of December 2021. The Health Clusters are targeting 83.2 million people with $ 2.8 billion in funding requested, of which only $870 million (31%) has been funded.

Afghanistan Health Cluster: ensuring continuity of health services

Afghanistan Health Cluster

15 November 2021 – The Health Cluster in Afghanistan is ensuring health service continuity to the entire population of the country. Even prior to August when the Taliban seized control of the country, nearly half of the population – 18.4 million people – were in need of humanitarian and protection assistance. The Health Cluster, led by the WHO, has been active in Afghanistan since 2007 supporting health sector coordination and service delivery targeting 10.3 million of the 14.5 million people in need of health assistance in 2021.

Somalia Health Cluster: strengthening health facility preparedness to meet Health Cluster commitment to address GBV

15 December 2021 – Decades of conflict, climactic shock and disease outbreaks have contributed to fragility and protracted humanitarian needs in Somalia. The Health Cluster, led by WHO, committed to GBV response and prevention as a strategic priority. For the past three years, targets for GBV service coverage have been established in the Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP). The 2021 HRP includes provision of health and protection services for GBV survivors as a multi-sectoral objective.

WHO supports whole-of-UN response to volcanic eruption and tsunami in Tonga

 

18 January 2022 – The World Health Organization (WHO) is closely coordinating with other United Nations agencies and partners to support the response to the recent volcanic eruption and tsunami in Tonga, including acting as a central channel of information in the face of continued telecommunications challenges.
