Click here 23 November 2023Cr Karen Pensabene, Mayor of Strathfield Dear Residents We have had a very interesting week in council, with lots of information to update you on. Council invited the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Region Development, Communications team to provide an update on the current plan for the air traffic impacts of the new Western Sydney Airport. Noise impacts from the new air routes seem to be very little for the Strathfield / Homebush area. The new airspace design has been put up for Public Exhibition until January 31, 2024. Please go to their website to see the changes and provide your feedback. If you would like more information, there will be a community information and feedback session held at Bankstown Sports Club on Saturday 2 December, registrations can be made via this link. A full listing of these sessions is available here. I recommend you attend one of these events to hear exactly how this project will affect our area. Nominations for the 2024 Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year are still open. I encourage all of you to head to Council’s website and vote for local citizens or groups who have made outstanding contributions to our community. Nominations need to be received by 5pm Friday the 15th of December. A panel has been established to determine the award recipients and will include the Mayor, Councillors Datta and Hall, along with the previous year’s award winners. Lastly, the Christmas season is kicking off here in Strathfield. We have festive installations at Strathfield Square, along with our Christmas trees in Homebush, Flemington and outside Council Chambers. We’re also getting ready for our annual Christmas Carols event on Saturday 2 December at Strathfield Park. Join us for carols, kid’s activities, a photo op with Santa and a special Christmas movie screening of Elf. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with your ideas and questions. THROWBACK THURSDAY Returned Services Balls in Strathfield Town Hall After the Wall Street crash of October 1929, the world quickly fell into Depression. Among those facing unemployment and hardship were the returned soldiers of the district – and their families. The Strathfield-Homebush branch of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers’ Imperial League (RSSIL) held annual balls in the Strathfield Town Hall to help relieve distress locally, receiving the support of prominent politicians and highly decorated military figures. Among these were His Excellency the Governor, Lord Game, who had sacked Premier Jack Lang just eight weeks earlier, former Acting Premier, Sir George Fuller, and pioneer aviator, Sir Keith Smith.
