16th September 2022A Message from the Head... It was extremely fitting that some of our younger pupils received a card from the late Queen Elizabeth II today thanking them for their kind messages on the occasion of her Platinum Jubilee in the summer. Fitting, because today we held our assembly, attended by senior pupils in Prep, together with High School and 6th Form, celebrating her life of service to us. During our act of commemoration, Mrs Titman delivered a Eulogy, Warren (one of our CCF cadets) read an adapted poem by Robert Burns, Mrs Coates and Mr Lenihan performed a moving rendition of We'll Meet Again, Nellie and India in L5 read a specially written poem to mark the occasion of the Queen's passing penned by the Poet Laureate Simon Armitage, we observed a minute's silence and finally we celebrated the accession to the throne of King Charles III by singing the national anthem. All in all it was a simple period of reflection, remembrance and celebration which was both poignant and moving. The pupils behaved impeccably from the start, right through to filing out in complete silence at the end and I am most grateful to them for this. Obviously we now break for an extended weekend marking the occasion of the late Queen's funeral and I therefore look forward to seeing everyone back in school on Tuesday. - Dr Tracy Johnson - Pupil NewsLucy and Izzy take part in the Schools Games National FinalsThe School Games National Finals took place earlier this month at Loughborough University hosted by the Youth Sports Trust. Ten sports were represented including netball. The competition was at franchise level for U15s; Izzy & Lucy Dyer from Upper 5 were selected to represent Leeds Rhinos. They played matches over 3 days of competition playing against the best netballers in the country many of whom have already been identified by the England Roses Pathway. The competition was tough and the Rhinos squad was a newly formed team playing against more established teams. The team finished in 7th overall beating Loughborough Lightning in a tough fought placing match which went into extra time. Rhinos won with a golden goal in the final few seconds of extra time. Izzy and Lucy were thrilled to be involved and enjoyed the experience. Willow lands role in short film Well done to Lower 2 pupil Willow Bell who was successful in an audition she had at the end of last term. Willow spent some of her summer break filming in Morecambe for a short film called 'Wider than the sky'. This was in addition to Willow's filming schedule for Emmerdale (Willow plays Millie Tate), which kept her very busy over the summer! Musical starsWell done to all our pupils who took and passed music examinations during the last academic year. Music is a huge part of life at Gateways; along with Mr Lenihan and Mrs Coates, we have nine other music teachers who visit Gateways each week teaching over 150 music lessons in a wide variety of instruments.
