Links eNewsletter - Term 2 Week 8 ![]() Dear valued member of the PLC community, A Message From the Deputy PrincipalThis week, I have had the privilege of taking part in our School coming together to showcase the hard work and co-curricular talents of our students. In the Senior School, the Dance Showcase was fabulous, the Inter-House Athletics Carnival was a great success, and I am very much looking forward to the combined PLC/Scotch College musical, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory and the Theatre Arts Showcase next week. In the Junior School, I have been equally as impressed with the students who have been working tirelessly in their co-curricular endeavours including some amazing products created for KidPreneur. The exceptional opportunities beyond the classroom are a point of difference at PLC. While the benefits and learning outcomes of these activities are less quantifiable, they are no less valuable. These opportunities balance wellbeing and provide teamwork, self-confidence, enjoyment, and making friends. Research has shown that co-curricular activities support students’ character development by giving them the skills needed for personal success and offer them the opportunity to grow into leadership roles. Students also feel a deeper connection to their school community and are more likely to describe their school as a “family”. So, I wish all students in the upcoming events all the best and know they will be looking forward to a well-deserved mid-year holiday break. Chris Robinson - Deputy Principal ![]() Next WeekWe certainly have a busy week ahead of us in the Junior School next week. On Monday, the Year 4 students will be attending their JIGSSA Winter Games, our Year 3 students will be hosting their Scotch College buddies on Wednesday, the KidPreneur Market is happening at lunchtime on Thursday and finally on Friday, the Year 6 students will be experiencing a taste of life in the Senior School. These events reflect the richness of opportunities available to our students, allowing them to experience new and challenging opportunities, ignite their curiosity and/or creativity, learn to make new relationships or demonstrate their level of mastery. Such experiences are also helping to build resilience in our children, for dealing with a variety of events supports them in seeing themselves as capable and empowered individuals who can learn to manage their emotions, and deal with new experiences in a positive way. Resilient children also learn to solve problems, for they tend to be persistent and look for solutions, treating mistakes as learning opportunities. PLC’s vision is:
To support this vision, the Junior School staff are always seeking ways of supporting and building resilience in our students. From the design of the playground, offering a range of sports to try, extending the student’s learning and thinking, or participating in the Outdoor Education Programme, our children need to be encouraged to be brave risk-takers who engage in new experiences. We believe these are the essential ingredients in preparing our children to grow into healthy young adults who will thrive today and tomorrow. Apples and a Heart for Bowel Cancer![]() June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and the PLC Red Apple Day fundraiser on Tuesday 21 June is a combined effort from the Junior School, the whole Year 7 cohort, and an IB CAS project. Bowel Cancer is Australia's second deadliest cancer and funds raised from purchasing two apples and a red and white felt heart will go towards research into the prevention of this disease. Bowel cancer claims the lives of 101 Australians every week (5,255 people a year) - but it's one of the most treatable types of cancer if found early. While the risk of bowel cancer increases significantly with age, the disease doesn't discriminate, affecting men and women, young and old. To support the fundraiser, please purchase a ticket by clicking the button below and two apples and a heart will be delivered to your child's class from Tuesday 21 June. Red apples kindly supplied by In Season Produce. The red and white hearts were made during the Year 7 Service Programme during Term 1. Student LeadershipThe selection process for the Year 6 Semester 2 Student Leaders has begun. Information has been sent out to Year 6 parents and the girls have been informed of the process. It can be both an exciting and difficult time for these students and I ask that our community supports us in reminding ourselves and our children that leadership is more than a badge, we can all lead and make a difference, for as Donald McGannon states:

Congratulations to Summers House for taking home this coveted win. The Years 7 – 9 Champion House was McNeil, taking out the Inverarity Inter-House Athletics Trophy. A huge congratulations to all the following Individual Athletic Champions: Year 7 Runner-Up Champion: Indi Wall It was fantastic to see how many students involved themselves fully in the day either competitively, for participation points or as student helpers. What impressed me the most was the way our students supported each other and the way they stepped up to the challenge to fill in last-minute spots to earn their House a point. The sense of House spirit was alive and well – particularly in the impressive marching competition. Lastly, thank you to all the staff who worked so hard to make the day such a success. ![]() ![]() ![]() Students in the Performing ArtsLast week, we had a number of students across all years in the Senior School participate in the annual Dance Showcase I Am. The quality of the dances was impressive, with students performing a range of styles in both groups and solo. A special mention to our Year 12 students who participated in their final showcase. The tribute to these students was touching and it was great to see them perform together for one final time. This week, we have the PLC Scotch musical Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Again, a large number of our students are involved in the two-cast production. I look forward to attending the production tonight and seeing our girls in action. Thank you to all the staff who have worked tirelessly to allow our students to shine in the Arts. ![]() Boarding House GoodbyesThis week in the Boarding House, we farewelled our beloved Bus Driver, Geoff Goddard who is retiring to spend time with his family, and cherished Mrs Jo Gray, who has begun an exciting new teaching leadership role. Geoff has played a pivotal role in the lives of all of our boarders. He has ferried them across Perth and the girls have taken great comfort in sharing their wins and their woes. As our two Year 12 speakers, Jasmine Walter and Olivia Ellis, so eloquently put it, “Geoff, you’ve watched us grow up and been there for us.” Jo, who has been a member of our Boarding House community for the last 11 years, has been a compassionate, dependable, and giving Year Co-ordinator, who has supported many of our current Year 12s through their entire boarding journey. As ex-boarder, Emma Barrett said, “you’ve been like a second Mum to us.” ![]() ![]() As our girls farewelled our long-standing members of the PLC community, there were tears and palpable feelings of love and gratitude. The evening left the Boarding House community feeling grateful for the wonderful people who make it so special. Susie Edwards – Director of Boarding & Katherine Hazlewood - Deputy of Wellbeing and Pastoral Care ![]() Refugee Week Service Opportunity Years 7 – 12As a part of a student-led IB Diploma CAS initiative, we invite students to connect with UWA for Refugees as part of Refugee Week. After school on Monday 20 June, up to 30 students will attend a presentation to engage students about what it means to be a refugee, and then practically work together to make gift packs that support the refugee health service through the Perth Children’s Hospital. To register your child, please complete and return this permission form and purchase a $5.65 ticket here by Friday 17 June. Birthing Kits Service Opportunity Year 7 – 11This is the fourth year that PLC is participating in the Birthing Kits for Australia (BKFA) Project led by IB CAS students. In 2022 it is led by Year 11 students Izi Harrold and Kavita Bisht. Birthing kits are small packages containing seven fundamental items for women in developing countries, to have a safe and sanitary birth. The not-for-profit NGO offer volunteers to either donate or build birthing kits, which BKFA then sends to particular countries around the world that are less economically developed and have high maternal mortality rates due to unsanitary births. The organisation’s goal aligns directly with the UN’s Goal #3: Good Health & Wellbeing - By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births. If your daughter is interested in participating in this project on Wednesday 10 August:
Applications and payments close Friday 24 June. There are only 40 spots available, therefore it’s a first-in, first-served basis! If you do not manage or are unable to take part in this project but you still want to get involved with the organisation, then you can either donate directly to BKFA or arrange your own Birthing Kit Assembly Day at home. When Year 12s Bryzlyn Sin and Saskia Fleming needed a third member to fill in on Tuesday at their Debating competition, they turned to Josie whose debating skills they’d noticed throughout the year. “I asked her on the day of the competition and thankfully she said ‘yes’,” Bryzlyn said. As part of the impromptu round, the trio only had an hour to prepare after receiving the topic ‘copyright laws do more harm than good to artists’ for which PLC were arguing in the negative. ![]() In a fierce showdown against Christ Church Grammar School, PLC managed to get over the line and win by a single point, much to the delight of the trio and PLC. “Josie was really impressive and definitely stepped up when put out of her comfort zone. She came up against some strong Year 12 competition and, in the end, she was just too good,” Saskia said. “It was a great opportunity and slightly daunting especially when they interjected with Points of Information which is when they can ask you a question during your delivery and this can really throw you off track,” Josie said. |
