![]() Dear friend, On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to visit with a resident of Helen Swindells Apartments named Wayne. Wayne and I chatted about life in Portland, his family, and the challenges the world has experienced in the last couple of years. I took comfort in our conversation as he reminded me of my grandfather, who passed away several years ago. He even had a phrase similar to something my grandfather used to say --, "It's time for Wayne to take care of Wayne." He was referencing his desire to give and take care of others at the expense of his wellbeing. Wayne, age 75, is recovering from hernia surgery on his back. When his mobility became an issue, a resident suggested he reach out to Lift UP and inquire about our Delivered Food Box program. "This box is so precious to me," Wayne says emotionally. "It's such a relief to not have to chase down food anymore." ![]() Example of Delivered Food Box As Wayne continued to express his appreciation, I began reflecting on all who make it possible for him to have the food security he deserves, from the volunteers who pack boxes and deliver the food, to the many donors and partners who make feeding our community happen. Wayne has always preferred to eat healthily and appreciates the variety offered in Lift UP's Delivered Food Boxes. With the box he received that day, Wayne chopped celery, peppers, and other vegetables with some beans and put it in a crockpot for soup. He had plans to pair it with cornbread. Food security should be possible for everyone, especially those who are most vulnerable, such as our senior citizens. Thanks to all who work partner with Lift UP to make this a reality for our neighbors. "It's such an honor to have food delivered to my door," Wayne says. I consider myself fortunate to be working work with an organization that provides Wayne the peace of mind he needs while recovering from his surgery. I'd say the honor is all ours, Wayne! Gratefully yours ![]() CaSaundra Johnson P.S. You can help ensure more neighbors like Wayne have access to the food security they deserve. Donate to our Spring Food and Drive today.
