Summertime Self-Care
Dear , Welcome to the summer newsletter for Ayurveda Seminars & Consulting! Have you noticed our new website upgrade? Your comments are most welcome. Our Earth’s tilt is now bringing in the hot season, long-awaited in the north latitudes. It’s a time of expansion and effulgence, bringing proneness to eruptions, rashes, irritations, summer complaints, infections, and heat-related conditions. Some cooling tips are presented here to help you keep a balance and enjoy summer’s slower, more sultry days and evenings:
Pranayama: Left nostril breathing while keeping the right nostril closed with a little cotton or your right thumb, helps circulate a cooling influence throughout your systems. Morning practice can be repeated as needed, for hot exposures later in the day, to help prevent overheating conditions, and cool down in excess heat.
Moon Salutations: Practice in the mornings and as needed later in the day, to help cool the channel systems and maintain a calm mind, especially if pressures and intensities arise.
Food Choices: Favour astringent, bitter and sweet tastes, including most lentils (except red/orange ones), most green vegetables (except spinach), and cooling fruits such as cherries, blueberries and dark grapes, while avoiding sour fruits (except lime). Avoid too much hot, spicy foods, and favour light items.
Beverages: Avoid alcohol, which increases pitta (hot, fiery, penetrating quality) dosha, and coffee, which disturbs the tri-dosha, while choosing pure water to irrigate with warm or hot water, especially to compensate for perspiration. Sipping as compared to gulping helps water to digest, assimilate and eliminate. Water remains cooling, even when heated or boiled, which makes it lighter to digest. Individual intake quantity can easily double from 1-2 litres daily to at least 3-4 litres daily on hot days, as water can evaporate from moment to moment, especially when outdoors. Limeade: Into one litre purified room temperature water, add 1tbsp lime juice and 1tbsp pure maple syrup. Shake well and sip slowly to keep the thirst quenched, especially after sweating. Variations: Add fennel seeds to help keep your digestion clear. Add two pinches of mineral salt for a glucose-saline beverage for helping to quickly restoring electrolytes. Avoid food dyes and aluminum cans. Fresh made for the day is best.
Colloidal Silver Gel or Spray: Use externally for minor scrapes, burns, mild rashes, outbreaks and eruptions, and internally for nasal infections or mild bleeding. It serves as an effective antibiotic remedy without fear of excessive flora disturbance. Yoga Nidra: Resting during the hot part of the mid-afternoon for 20-30 minutes, with the crown eastward, can help cool the body and rest the mind, setting the stage for slower late afternoon and evening activities. Active times can be morning and evening, while passive times can be during the hottest period from 2-4pm. Yoga Nidra is restful and helps to avoid daytime sleeping.
Sunscreen: TV weather persons so often advise the use of sunscreen, however many ingredients in sunscreen are now proven to be carcinogenic. Dr. Lad advises Neem Oil (banyanbotanicals.com) to apply frequently if one must be outdoors, as a 35 SPF. Direct sun exposure must be carefully measured to avoid dire consequences of heat related conditions. Eye disorders, neurological imbalances, stroke and worse are possible during the heat wave season, now increasing globally each year.
Colours: Choose light coloured garments of cooling pastels, silver or white to help reflect light, and avoid dark, dense colours especially black and red which emanate and hold more heat. Chromobiotherapeutics engage cause and effect. Garments of light, natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, hemp and silk can help to feel cooler and fresher. Hats are necessary to provide shade to the nape and crown, particularly sensitive to heat stroke, and protect the eyes/face from excess sun exposure.
Scents: Enjoy sandalwood, rose and jasmine perfumes to keep freshness during daytimes, and evenings romantic and enticing.
Early to Bed: Winding down by 9pm helps to sleep by 10pm and therefore awaken early to be alert for meditation from 3-6am, to take advantage of the cooler early morning temperatures, for the all-important stillness, communion and focus on the changeless Divine. Sleeping on the right side helps induce left-nostril (cooling) breathing. If sleep eludes you, sit for meditation, proven to be more restorative to all psycho-biological functions than even sleep.
Weather: Drought conditions may alternate with short, afternoon rains, and bring occasional heat domes, which can become life-threatening. To help maintain your middle path during these changing patterns, try to shift with the breeze and align according to changing temperatures conditions. Avoidance of extremes helps to keep to a balanced middle path. Plan well! Keep precious water supplies on hand for cooling the crown, forehead, nape of the neck, face and feet, as needed. This is the time for special care of babies, elders and those undergoing a pathogenesis.
