Cr Matthew Blackmore, Mayor of Strathfield

We have a big week coming up filled with lots of exciting celebrations! This Sunday 22 January, we will be celebrating The Harvest Festivals of India Sub-continent which will start at the Sri Karphaga Vinayakar Temple located at The Crescent, Homebush West at 9am.

Watch Homebush West shops come to life on Monday 23 January at 10am with Lunar New Year celebrations organised by the Flemington Chamber of Commerce.

Both events are proudly supported by Strathfield Council, and we encourage our local community to join in on the festivities!

Since being elected Mayor, one of my big areas of focus has been on safety and traffic around our schools. You may have noticed that Council is currently doing works on our 6th pedestrian crossing in the last 12 months at Oxford Rd, Strathfield. These works will be completed by early next week and will provide a big safety improvement for students from Strathfield Girls High School and St Martha’s Catholic Primary School.

If you have any local matters that you would like to discuss, please reach out to me on 0428 952 095 or cr.mblackmore@strathfield.nsw.gov.au.

A Homebush Plane Crash, 1949

On 23 October 1949, a 21-year-old pilot ran into trouble over Homebush when the engine of his Tiger Moth stalled. William Fraser searched desperately for a place to land. From 1,500 feet he spotted the recreation grounds of the Arnott’s biscuit factory and made that his goal. He just cleared the high-tension wires, but the wind caught the Moth, hurling it into a tall sewage vent, snapping one wing. The plane hit a small iron footbridge over Powells Creek before plunging into the stormwater canal below. Somehow Fraser climbed out of the debris with only a cut to his lip.
