Management of Brain Metastasis

By Dr Hamish Alexander

Metastatic tumors are the most common neoplasm in the brain, occuring in 24-45% of all cancer patients and accounting for 20% of cancer deaths annually.  These rates are on the increase due to a boost in survival of patients with cancer because of modern therapies along with increased availability of advanced imaging techniques for early detection. Newer therapies such as immunotherapy prolong overall survival in some cancers such as Melanoma but like many other chemotherapy drugs penetrate the CNS poorly, leaving the brain a safe haven for tumor growth.

Brain & Spine Health

By Prof David Walker

Exercise has been shown to help brain function at all ages. In babies and infants, physical activity is critical in brain development. In school kids, regular exercise improves learning and concentration. In adults, regular exercise improves efficiency at work, concentration and cognitive functioning, as well as improving mood. In some studies, exercise has been shown to be as effective as medication in the treatment of depression. In the elderly, exercise is important in staving off cognitive decline, and in those that have shown early signs of dementia, exercise slows this process down.

The human brain evolved when our ancestors ran or walked long distances every day to survive. We were meant to run !
