WHAT'S HAPPENING AT THE CHESTER RONNING CENTRE

A Note from the Director

Greetings!

September brings the autumnal equinox. I find the transition to Fall a mix of melancholy and appreciation. I wish summer would linger a little longer but love the season’s foliage and traditions. If I was an animated character I’d be Olaf in Frozen 2 strolling through a forest with falling leaves saying, “I wish this could last forever, and yet change mocks us with her beauty.”

Our annual report is finished! Follow the link below to see what the Ronning Centre has been up to.

Please join us this Wednesday, Sept 25, for Mathew Thiessen’s talk titled “A Jewish Jesus: Restoring Jesus to Judaism”. Thiessen’s research interests focus on the rise of Christianity particularly as it relates to early Judaism. His focus is on questions related to ethnicity and identity construction in order to better understand the way in which ancient religions functioned. Please follow the link below to register.

We are also excited to announce we are hosting a conversation with Peter Beinart on Oct 22. Peter Beinart is Professor of Journalism and Political Science at the Newmark School of Journalism at the City University of New York. He is a contributing opinion writer at The New York Times, Editor-at-Large of Jewish Currents, an MSNBC political commentator and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace. He writes the Beinart Notebook newsletter on Substack.Com . We will be discussing zionism, antisemitism, and campus protests. More details on how to register and attend to come.

Sincerely,

Joseph R. Wiebe

Although most people now acknowledge that Jesus was a first-century Jew, interpreters of the Gospels often present him as opposed to Jewish law and customs. In this talk, Matthew Thiessen, PhD, will dispel these popular misconceptions, reexamining Jesus's Jewishness.

On Our Bookshelf

A Jewish Paul

What was the apostle Paul's relationship to Judaism? How did he view the Jewish law? How did he understand the gospel of Jesus's messiahship relative to both ethnic Jews and gentiles? These remain perennial questions both to New Testament scholars and to all serious Bible readers.
