Celebrating the Legacy of Violet King Henry

The Faculty of Law is pleased to invite you to Celebrating the Legacy of Violet King Henry: An Evening with Jo-Anne Henry on Thursday, October 27. During this event, Jo-Anne Henry, daughter of Violet King Henry (‘53 LLB), will speak about her mother's legacy and how she's followed in her mother's footsteps as an advocate for racial equity in her own work with children and families.

The determined spirit of Violet King Henry is just one of the qualities that places her among the most trailblazing graduates to ever emerge from the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta. King Henry was one of only four women in her class and became the Faculty's first Black graduate. When she was called to the Alberta bar, she became the first Black woman to practise law in Canada and the first Black lawyer admitted to the Law Society of Alberta. She went on to have a remarkable career, which you will learn more about at the event.

Following Ms. Henry’s presentation, there will be a Q&A session hosted by the Black Law Students Association, followed by a reception to close out the evening.

Thursday, October 27                                                                                                      This free event begins at 5:30 p.m. (doors open at 5:00 p.m.)                                Telus International Centre on the University of Alberta campus, 87 Avenue and 111 Street (immediately south of the Law Centre).
