Happy Birthday to us!
Did you know that 2021 marks our 30th year in business? 1991 was the year that my parents, Greg and Diane Roberts founded TCM Rentals Sales Strata (as it is known today). Our office was situated in Grafton Street and back then was known as Roberts & Associates (Real Estate agents). Cairns Strata Management (CSM) was then born when Greg and Diane saw a need for a more personalised strata management service in Cairns. CSM was eventually rebranded as The Community Managers (TCM).
I have been a part of the business since 1997 and I'm incredibly proud of our growth over the last 30 years. I am especially proud to have shared this journey with 3 generations of family (my grandfather was involved in the business in the early years also). Although times have changed a great deal since then and our business has expanded to include property management and real estate sales (again), we are still very much a family business and our team are family. We thought for our 30th birthday year it would be fun to take a trip down memory lane, back to 1991 where it all began. Back to the era when Google was not yet invented so we had to rely on good old Encyclopedias!
We are grateful for the technology and luxuries that we enjoy today. However, one thing has not changed in the last 30 years and that is our commitment to providing good old fashioned customer service. After all, where would we be without our customers?

TCM - Celebrating 30 Years!
Let's jump into a time machine back to 1991. When milk cost only 83c and a stamp was only 43c. A middle range home in the inner Sydney suburbs would set you back around $155,000. Now, it would cost you millions! Here in Cairns, Kanimbla and Mount Sheridan were still cane fields, Cairns Central was a primary school and the lagoon was not even a blue print yet (but we did have the Water Works - see right). Space Skate and the Coral Twin Drive In were the places to be on the weekend (or the Playpen for the grown ups! - Who remembers the building below?)
Mobile phones have definitely improved (and shrunk) since the 1980's with 1991 seeing the introduction of 2G. We were still years away from smart phones in 1991 and phone camera's were not even invented yet! In the early 90's, mobile phones were still very much a luxury.
Back in the early 90’s when our office was still in Grafton Street (see right) our strata clients mostly sent letters and faxes as opposed to emails, which became more popular later in the decade as the millennium approached. Now, email is our main form of communication with clients as well as the phone and Zoom – which ramped up significantly in mid 2020 (for obvious reasons!) Who still loves to receive a hand written letter in the post though?
