As Finance Supervisor, David is responsible for organizing the Department of Family Medicine budget. After 11 years of doing so, he's found himself comfortable in his role and environment, despite the challenges the University of Alberta continues to face budget-wise.
The Department of Family Medicine net casts across its sibling departments within the University and other partnering organizations, with budget conversations and decisions cast likewise. David calls his working with this wide range of people the most valuable experience he's gained so far in his role. As to what's keeping him understandably busy currently:
At the end of his work days, David decompresses by "reading or watching a good movie." As to what books and movies he defines as good? One can only imagine they don't involve much talk of budgets. Spotlight NominationNominate a faculty or staff member for future inclusion in a Family Matters spotlight! This saying, whatever its actual origins, is generally interpreted to be an ironic comment on the challenges we all face during times of change and trouble. It is very apt for many of us right now: we are all dealing with constant change and uncertainty associated with upheaval and transformation in government, healthcare systems, and at the University. There is one constant, though: the excellent work done by the members of our Department. We have a fantastic residency program, passionate teachers at both the postgraduate and undergraduate levels, and a group of researchers who are doing exceptional work across a broad range of areas. All of this work is supported by an equally terrific team of administrators and support staff. I am incredibly proud to be a member of this Department. While we may be living in interesting times, I have no doubt that we will continue to do excellent work in improving healthcare and outcomes for our patients and communities. - Shelley Ross, Professor & Academic Director - Teaching & Learning Strategic Planning Initiatives (FoMD) Shelley Ross is a PhD researcher whose focus is on learning and assessment in medical education. She joined the Department in 2008 as an Assistant Professor, and was promoted to Professor in 2021. She has served in multiple leadership roles locally and nationally, including as the President of the Canadian Association for Medical Education (2020-2022). When she is not doing work stuff, she likes to bake things, grow things, and hang out with her family (human and fur-kids). ![]() NEXT IN FAMILY MATTERS... Submit your:
