Journalist, lecturer, broadcaster, linguist and musician, Aileen Alpen travelled the world, settling in Poland where she considered herself the only Australian resident. From its border with Germany she reported on the shocking expulsion of thousands of Jews after Kristallnacht during November 1938. She was broadcasting live on air as Germany invaded Poland on 1 September 1939 and was rushed into hiding. ‘Safe’ in London, she was bombed during the Blitz.
