Featured Publication - Antivirals

Ubiquitylation is a modification that cells use to mark proteins for degradation or alter their function. Viruses exploit and interfere with ubiquitylation to establish infection, and the Ingham and Julien labs utilize ubiquitinomics to comprehensively understand how viruses do this. They demonstrated that in cells infected with the poxvirus, vaccinia virus, several cellular antiviral proteins were ubiquitylated, including TRIM25. They further found that TRIM25 relocalized to punctate structure in infected cells, and that the viral protein, C16, was both necessary and sufficient to promote TRIM25 ubiquitylation and relocalization. They propose that TRIM25 ubiquitylation and/or relocalization is a strategy used by vaccinia virus to evade the antiviral activity of TRIM25. The Ingham and Julien labs have expanded their ubiquitinomics work to other viruses and are well-positioned to investigate how new and emerging viral threats engage with ubiquitylation for their benefit.
