Click here 7 July 2022Cr Matthew Blackmore, Mayor of Strathfield Our new park at 20 Parramatta Road in Homebush was officially opened on Thursday 30 June and handed over to Council this week. A plaque was laid in honour of the late Marlene Doran OAM, acknowledging her unwavering commitment to community work over the years. The land was dedicated to Council as part of a Voluntary Planning Agreement with a neighbouring project and is a good example of obtaining community benefit at no cost to our ratepayers. This week, we celebrate NAIDOC Week and I encourage everyone to visit our Boomalli Exhibition at Strathfield Library Ironbark Gallery. I had the pleasure of opening this exhibition yesterday. We are proud to be showcasing two paintings from the Archibald Prize winner Blak Douglas and many more from established and emerging artists. Hermon Slade moved to Homebush West in 1943. The site had previously been used as a brickworks – and storage for American torpedoes in its huge pit. Slade manufactured wartime chemicals including Tego Gluefilm, a waterproof polymer used in the Mosquito bomber. Another product was dibutyl phthalate, a plasticising material with potential as a stabiliser for the explosive material, cordite. Dimethyl phthalate was produced to control the mosquitoes – and malaria – in New Guinea. Apartments in Courallie Avenue now stand on this site. Visit the Minding Our Business exhibition at Strathfield Library between 12 July and 14 August. Image: W. Hermon Slade, Homebush West c.1940s by Milton Kent.
