The Principal, Council and St Andrew’s College community honour the life of Dr Robert Sowerby (Bob) Armstrong who passed away on 10th November 2021, aged 87.
Bob was a loyal and supportive contributor to St Andrew's College during his lifetime. He started working at the College as a Chemistry Tutor in 1960, and then became the Senior Tutor from 1963-1967 as well as the Wilson Fellow from 1964–1967. He was also a was a Member of the St Andrew's College Foundation, having been a regular supporter of the various scholarships programs over the years.
As a Professor at the University of Sydney's School of Chemistry, Bob became a highly accomplished scientist and academic in chemistry, respected and revered by colleagues and students across the world. He also volunteered his time
for Honorary Committee work around on student re-entry, scholarships, standards and values. Those who knew him say that he was always thoughtful, understanding and fair on these occasions and greatly enjoyed these responsibilities. Bob was held in high regard within the Staff Association, Academic Board and Senate at University of Sydney. He was also said to be a measured, thoughtful representative for St Andrew's College as a result.
Bob later moved to Glebe Point and as a resident there, became a respected member of The Glebe Society. He was Senior Vice President of the Society in 1981-1982, Vice President in 2004, and
President 2005-2006. He was very active in securing Blackwattle Bay Park as a community resource and was President when the Foreshore Walk was opened in November 2006.
Those close to Bob have said these wonderful words describe him perfectly "...warmth, wit, inclusivity, collegiate, kind, generous, friendly, congenial, sociable, convivial..." as well as "a strong supporter of lunch clubs (University of Sydney 54 Lunch Club) and a fine gentleman." He enjoyed music, art, politics, travel and good food and wine. Bob will be remembered fondly as a tireless mentor, a wonderful friend and colleague.
His partner Susie and the whole Armstrong family are held strongly in our thoughts and our dearest sympathy is extended to all who knew him.
