17th June 2022A Message from the Head... ![]() As the week draws to a close in the baking heat, we have enjoyed welcoming into school, a large proportion of the pupils who are due to join our Gateways community in September. Pictured above are the majority of the pupils who will form next year's Upper 3 - sadly some couldn't join us for New Pupils' afternoon on Wednesday because they were away enjoying year 6 residentials in their current schools. In addition to the pupils pictured above, Mrs Wallis and Mrs Bartle welcomed around 30 further pupils who are due to join other year groups across Early Years and the Prep School in September. Everyone had a great time and we can't wait to see them all again in September. ![]() Today Transition and Lower 1 enjoyed a trip to trip to Thornton Hall Country Park and Lower 6 participated in the UCAS Fair at Leeds Beckett. Articles will follow next week of course. Earlier in the week we had the Lower 5 Careers workshops and a Lower 4 languages day - you can read about both of these events in the "Articles from...' section of this newsletter. Next week - Sports day, with parents able to attend, makes a return on Thursday (weather permitting!) and Lower 5 will enjoy an overnight trip to Alton Towers! I think it is safe to say that, although the end of term is only 3 weeks away, life at Gateways is as busy as ever! ![]() Of course it also is Father's day on Sunday and today Reception hosted a 'Donuts for Dads' event (pictured above). Much to everyone's delight, we had a full turn out from the dads - it wasn't just about the donuts though - dads were put through a few sporting challenges too!! Keep an eye on the 'Articles from...' section next week for a write up. In the meantime, have a lovely weekend everyone. - Dr Tracy Johnson - 2nd place in the Physics Olympics competition![]() On Wednesday Moiz, Amy, Warren and Beth represented Gateways School in the Physics Olympics competition at St Peter’s School in York. They were challenged to compete in five practical activities throughout the day, ranging from building a tower with the most gravitational potential energy to building the fastest boat powered by capacitors that were charged from solar cells. I was really impressed with the teamwork and determination all four pupils, they were even completing calculations over lunch! Overall, they placed second out of twenty-three teams, an excellent achievement! See the grid below for the full results. Can you spot any former Gateways pupils in the poster behind them? - Miss Kim Ashurst - ![]() Pupil NewsEleanor's dresses on tour! ![]() Lower 5 pupil Eleanor Shenderey is known at Gateways and beyond for her exceptional sewing skills and designs. Her latest costumes are continuing to impress and have been on tour in historic houses in the area. Eleanor has taken part in the Castle Howard on screen exhibition wearing her Bridgerton style and Regency inspired costume, photographs of which were published in the Times and the Yorkshire Post. On 2nd June Mrs Wilson and Mr Crosby went to see Eleanor at Temple Newsam where she wore a beautiful gown representing Queen Mary as well as displaying other amazing dresses such as the blue one worn by Queen Elizabeth II when she met President Kennedy in 1961. Eleanor studies Textiles at GCSE level and is researching courses post 18 to develop her skills further. We are very proud of her and can't wait to see what exciting creations she will make next. Business volunteers needed![]() Business Studies is a popular subject at Gateways and we are seeking volunteer business owners for a series of business talks / discussions with pupils in the next academic year to support their understanding. The talks would highlight how business infuses many aspects of life / culture and how business relates to other areas of the school curriculum. Volunteers would come into school (ideally at lunchtime) to share their experience of owning and running a business with pupils from Upper 3 – Upper 6, to talk about how they got started and the main highs and lows of their business life. We are looking for a range of volunteers and businesses from different sectors and types of ownership - please click here for more information. If you think you could assist in this area and would like to get involved, please email rosemary.haynes@gatewaysschool.co.uk - Mrs Rosemary Haynes - PFA Summer Ball SponsorsThe Summer Ball is just 2 weeks away and the committee are busy working their magic to give you all a brilliant night of food, fun and entertainment. This event would not be possible without the support of our very generous sponsors. Their donations will help us achieve our fundraising target to upgrade the outdoor sports courts at Gateways School for the benefit of all pupils and the wider community. Please check out their websites below for more information. www.mostonconsultants.co.uk Enormous thanks to all our sponsors, we are very grateful for your support. - Kathryn Dyer, Chair of the PFA - Non school uniform day![]() We are inviting pupils to wear their own clothes on Tuesday 21st June in exchange for a cash donation to Gateways PFA. All money raised will go towards the updating of the outdoor sports courts at Gateways. There is no minimum donation suggested for this, and we do ask parents to be as generous as possible as it is all for a great cause! We are very close to our £20,000 target now and this final push will help us get over the line so we can donate the money to the school to enable the work to be carried out. Thank you in advance for your generosity. - Gateways PFA - Quick Links To Popular ContentArticles from ... |
