Dear Eagles,

This week, I would like to highlight a paid leadership opportunity for the Fall of 2023. I encourage those who are eager to enhance a sense of belonging for all students at BC to apply to be a CURA Facilitator.  As a CURA Facilitator you will welcome the newest class of Eagles and facilitate a conversation that will foster awareness and respect for difference.

As classes wind down and study days and exams commence, the Division of Student Affairs is here to support you through these upcoming weeks. I want to encourage each of you to take advantage of the study break opportunities that will be happening on campus during exams such as the Student Affairs Study Break in Maloney Reception Hall on Monday, December 12. There will be treats and coffee along with The Center for Student Wellness relaxation activities!

Lastly, I would like to remind you of my office hours. I am holding one more open office hour for the semester this Friday, December 9. I encourage you to stop in as a study break and say hello!

Sincerely,

Dr. Shawna Cooper Whitehead
Vice President for Student Affairs

“The Return of the Native: Europe’s Past and the
Future of America’s Polarization”
A Clough Distinguished Lecture by Sidney Tarrow

For decades, political scientist Sidney Tarrow has been a leading expert on social movements, political parties, and, more broadly, the strategies and dynamics of political contention. His most recent book is Movements and Parties  (Cambridge 2021), a historical and comparative study of the interactions between social movements and political parties during five critical junctures of American history

As a Clough Distinguished Lecturer, Prof. Tarrow will draw on his extensive comparative research into European democratic regimes to speak to the challenges polarization poses to American democracy today. He will also make the case that the postwar experience of European countries can afford valuable insights into the nature of these challenges, and how they might be addressed.

Speakers Include: Sidney Tarrow, Emeritus Maxwell M. Upson Professor of Government at Cornell University and Adjunct Professor at the Cornell Law School and Marshall Ganz, Rita E. Hauser Senior Lecturer in Leadership, Organizing and Civil Society at the Kennedy School of Government.
