Resignation

It is with some sadness that I share some information with you. I was informed on Friday that Sharon Todd - Central Island Division PCN Director has tendered her resignation from the position for the end of November.

Sharon has been integral to the success of our organization for 9 years and a true Division champion and member support and resource. She will be extremely hard to replace because she is pretty unique and special. The Division has no plans of yet, but I will keep this membership apprised of our plans as we move forward.

Until then, please join me in wishing all the best for Sharon's future. She is a mega-talent and has yet to realize her significant capacity. I look forward to watching her soar.

Evelyn Clark
Executive Director

The Rural Voices Gathering 2024 - RCCbc.

The Rural Voices Gathering will be held virtually via Zoom on November 20 and 27, with local, in-person community discussion groups to meet between the virtual dates.

Registration is free and open to anyone living, working or providing services to a rural, remote, First Nations, or Métis community in British Columbia.

Inquiring about DM in CKD survey project involvement

The Island Health Renal Program is conducting an evaluation project to better understand the gaps and challenges in providing diabetes care for adults living with chronic kidney disease (CKD).  As part of this project, we are reaching out to a variety of providers across the healthcare system to learn about their experience of providing diabetes care for people living with chronic kidney disease (CKD).  We invite you to participate in this project by completing a short survey.  Your input will help us better understand the challenges and opportunities for improving diabetes management supports, including collaborations between programs, for people living with kidney disease.

It should take about 10 minutes to complete the survey and individual responses will be kept confidential.  Your name will not appear anywhere on the survey.  Further information about how the findings in this project will be shared and used is included at the top of the survey page.
The survey will be open until Friday November 29, 2024.  To complete the survey please click on the link below:

If you have any questions or concerns about the survey, please contact me at 250 755 6290, Option 2 or via email at anneli.kaethler@islandhealth.ca

Reminder to submit your 2024 LFP Panel Payment claim form

If you have not yet submitted the LFP Panel Payment claim form for 2024, you must do so by October 18, 2024, to receive your first and/or second quarter installment with the third quarter installment on November 30, 2024.

Eligible physicians enrolled in the LFP Payment Model must submit an online claim form once per year to claim the panel payment for the year. If you have already submitted your 2024 claim form, you do not need to submit it again this year.

Instructions on how to claim the 2024 panel payment were emailed to individual physicians in March, June, and September 2024.

Detailed Q&As on panel payments can be found in the BC Family Doctors Billing Question Library (login required). If you have any questions, please contact the FPSC Billing Support team at FP.Billing@doctorsofbc.ca

Transferring patients using the PAS

For the first time, family physicians are able to use the Provincial Attachment System to transfer patients from their panel to another physician, or from one clinic to another.  This will benefit physicians who may be retiring, leaving a clinic, or simply need to transfer a patient to another physician. It will also make it faster and easier to transfer patients when they appear on an incorrect panel list.

What physicians need to know

  • The Panel Transfer tab can be found on the PAS Home page, or on the My Panel page.
  • The physician who is sending a request for their patient to be transferred will need to use the receiving physician’s MSP Practitioner Number.
  • The receiving physician can either accept or decline the request(s) on a patient-by-patient basis.
  • Any number of patients can be transferred at one time. If a physician would like to transfer only a few patients, they can search for them by name or by using their Personal Health Number (PHN). There is also an option to transfer an entire panel at one time.
  • Physicians can delegate to non-clinical staff by completing the endorsement process.

Other changes in the PAS include:

  • Endorsing non-clinical staff to use the PAS - Updates have been made to simplify the endorsement process. Physicians are encouraged to endorse non-clinical staff to support tasks including managing panel information, supporting attachment, and updating panel capacity.
  • Using the OneHealthID Portal - Changes have been made to help improve the experience when logging into the PAS. User guides and videos have been updated to reflect recent portal changes.

Detailed information on all of the above can be found in the PAS Learning Center. Please e-mail questions or concerns to healthbcsupport@phsa.ca.

Webinar for MOAs: Attaching patients from the PAS

Following several introductory webinars for MOAs over the summer, the Ministry of Health will be hosting a continuing series starting with the role of the PAS in facilitating patient attachment.

The webinar will walk MOAs through the process from when a patient registers for the Health Connect Registry to when they are confirmed for attachment in the Panel Registry. There will be interactive system demos and opportunities for questions and feedback.

Watch for dates and registration information to follow in the coming weeks.

FPSC updates on inpatient care and long-term care supports

The Family Practice Services Committee (FPSC) recently provided an update on supports for inpatient and long-term care including:

  • An extension of FPSC Transition Funding for Inpatient Care and the FPSC Assigned Inpatient Care Network Fee (14086) to March 31, 2025.
  • The establishment of a new Long-Term Care Initiative Advisory Group to gain your insights and recommendations about better supporting care to this patient population through further improvements to the Long-Term Care Initiative.
  • Funding for a new payment is currently being developed for physicians in rural and mid-size communities that recognizes the challenges of providing comprehensive care across both clinic and hospital settings.
  • Adjustments to FPSC On-Call/Availability Funding to allow for more local flexibility, especially in smaller communities where one physician is simultaneously on-call for multiple services.

Invitation to Participate in a Research Study on the Diffusion of Uptake of Evidence-based Practices within Networks of Care Providers for PWSUD

Dr. Bohdan Nosyk and the BCCSU are looking for participants for a research study to determine what factors impact the uptake of new guideline recommended clinical practices among OUD prescribers. This research study is led by Dr. Bohdan Nosyk, Megan Kurz, and collaborators at the BC Centre on Substance Use. Dr. Nicole Malette and Kiran Parmar are responsible for the data collection, analysis, and reporting for this component of the study.

If you are an OUD prescriber and have written at least one OAT prescription in the past 12 months, you may be eligible to participate. Participation is free and voluntary, and you may withdraw at any time during the study. For your participation in the discussion, we will provide a $100 honoraria and automatic entry into a draw for a $100 gift card. You may withdraw from the study at any time without any penalty or explanation.

If you would like to take part in the study, please email Dr. Nicole Malette evaluation@bccsu.ubc.ca
