Merry Christmas from SLSNSW

Peter Agnew

Dear Members,

On behalf of the Surf Life Saving NSW officers, staff and wider team, I wanted to wish you and your families and very Merry, Safe, and relaxing Christmas.

May it generate valuable memories and distil in everyone the importance of care, support and community.

This Christmas holiday period will, if the forecasts of hot dry weather are correct, be potentially one of our busiest times operationally on the beaches, so please stay safe, look after your fellow patrol members, be confident in the skills you have been taught and be proud to be a lifesaver protecting those recreating on our beaches and within the red and yellow flags.

This past year has been an exceptionally busy time for SLSNSW, with us receiving record funding support from the NSW Government enabling greater and enhanced water safety initiatives and programs to protect our communities and visitors along the NSW coastline. Our members have again demonstrated why we (you) are all regarded as some of the best lifesavers in Australia, having rescued last year over 4,700 people. That is an unbelievable when you think about the lives saved, that this Christmas will be enjoying time and memories with their families. You should be incredibly proud.

I wanted to thank all those lifesavers on patrol over this Christmas period, and those members of our Support Operations teams and Call Out Teams who will no doubt again be busy responding into unpatrolled locations and out of hours to save community member lives. Please stay safe everyone.

I was elected in May 2023 this year as President SLSNSW, and for me personally, this is an incredibly proud and humbling honour and I have enjoyed working with a highly capable team in the past seven months. I nominated to become President to make a real difference for our members, and to ensure your experience on and off the beach is the best and most enjoyable it can be, and ensure SLSNSW retains its position as one of the most iconic and respected volunteer lifesaving and emergency services organisation in NSW. The team are making some good progress in reviewing membership strength, addressing education pain points, providing support for struggling clubs, change management and greater connection with regional NSW. I will be providing you an update on progress in these areas and others in the new year while working hard next year to ensure this focus is retained.

Finally, thank you so much for the support you have given to your club, branch and SLSNSW this year.

Merry Christmas everyone. Be safe !!

Peter Agnew ESM
