I wish to congratulate our Library and Open Space teams for their nominations at the Local Government Awards I attended last week. Our Library team was nominated for their innovative work to provide longer library hours for our residents. Access hours have now increased to 84.5 hours per week, and we have received positive feedback and support from our community for what is proving to be a valued service. Our Open Space team was nominated in the Organisational Diversity and Inclusion category for their efforts in employing female staff in traditionally male-dominated roles, which has enhanced the diversity of our workplace. I know our residents value the splendid work from our Council officers and employees. Don’t forget to say hello and thanks when you are out and about in your area. I have also spent some time this week visiting our local parks and community centres with our Capital works team. I have been particularly interested in seeing changes and upgrades to Bates Street Community Centre and Tavistock Reserve. Our works team agreed these areas need help and will report back to Council. As always, please contact me with any of your council requests or news on cr.kpensabene@strathfield.nsw.gov.au Celebrate NAIDOC at our next art exhibition opening! For over 35 years, First Nations’ Aboriginal artist, elder, educator and performer, Walangari Karntawarra has painted his Dreamtime stories. We are lucky enough to have this body of work as our next art exhibition in the Ironbark Gallery. Book your spot by 26 June for the official opening on 4 July 2023. THROWBACK THURSDAY Strathfield's Model Railway Strathfield has long been known as an important railway junction but the suburb was once home to a very different railway system. Arthur Trimingham’s model railway was photographed by Pix magazine in January 1941. A joiner and carpenter from Yorkshire, Arthur settled at 14 Augusta Street, Strathfield where he built his impressive layout. During the Depression he constructed rails from kerosene tins and carriages from bits and pieces. Later he expanded and managed to turn it into a business, supplying collectors and shops. He even melted down old pots and pans to make wheels. Arthur died in Strathfield in 1956. Arthur Trimingham and his model railway, 2 January 1941.
