Welcome to the incoming MFA in Creative Writing students! Alums are welcome to join students and faculty at our annual Graduate Programs Social on Tuesday, September 6, at 6:30 p.m. on the Argyros Forum 3rd Floor South Patio. The following Tuesday, September 13, Tabula Poetica begins with Diana Khoi Nguyen. Join us for her Poetry Talk at 2:30 p.m. and her Poetry Reading at 7 p.m.; both events are free and will be held in AF 209A. Also, check out the 10th Anniversary Exhibit of Tab Journal on the 2nd floor of Argyros Forum. Nguyen’s visit is also the kickoff for this year’s Engaging the World: Leading the Conversation on Ethnic Studies. Other events include An Evening with George Takei (ticket required); A Night of Remembrance: Honoring America's Latino Veterans; A Talk with Lalo Alcaraz: Author, Artist, Cartoonist, Pocho; and a discussion of Everything Everywhere All at Once. The MFA program will be headed to Seattle for AWP in March 2023! Both MA/MFA student Lydia Pejovic and Graduate Programs Coordinator David Krausman proposed panels that were accepted. Season 2 is set to start filming again soon with a premiere in October. Meghan Kemp-Gee '21 Meghan Kemp-Gee's poems "Taking" and "An Ending" were published with The Malahat Review Issue 219. Ansalee Morrison '22 Ansalee Morrison has accepted a position as an adjunct instructor at Brigham Young University to teach First Year Composition. Jason Thornberry '21 Jason Thornberry has accepted a position as an adjunct instructor with Seattle Pacific University. He's teaching a course in September called “Writing Our Memories.” Student AchievementsAudrey Fong Audrey Fong's essay, "'Black Eyed Women': A Reminder of Empire and Its Lingering Effects" will be published in the South Dakota Review. Montez Jennings Montez Jennings has accepted the position of prose editorial assistant for the museum of americana. She will be assisting in reading submissions and working with writers. Makena Metz Makena Metz's song "Race Against Time" (co-written with Dan Povenmire and Angela Parrish) premiered in a new DTVA animated show Hamster and Gretel. Watch and listen in Episode 2: "Math Punch!" on Disney+. Also, her short story "The Tea Shop" was published by For Page & Screen Magazine. EventsMark your calendar to join our MA, MFA, and Dual MA/MFA students in an start-of-year celebration on Tuesday, September 6, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on the third-floor patio of Argyros Forum. Students, Staff, Faculty, and Alums are all welcome! OpportunitiesThe Lascaux Review is hosting a creative nonfiction contest. The entry fee is $15, and the deadline is September 30, 2022. The journal also considers general submissions with no fee. Scribente Maternum, a community of writers who identify as mothers, are hosting an in-person retreat in Baltimore, Maryland at The Clifton House October 20-23, 2022 in partnership with The CityLit Project. The "Write Like a Mother Retreat" is for every writer who identifies as a mom. In addition to having extended craft time with facilitators, attendees will have dedicated craft time and time to flex additional creative muscles around visual journaling. Fresh Words is looking for poetry, short stories, essays, essays, and plays. Kaleidoscope (a publication of United Disability Services) seeks fiction, nonfiction, poetry, artwork, and book reviews that challenge and overcome stereotypical, patronizing, and sentimental attitudes about disability. No fee, and it's a paying outlet. Poets & Writers has an extensive list of literary journals with website links and reading periods included, and you can filter by genre. There is also a good list of contests that rolls according to impending deadlines and a list of book review outlets. |
