Last night, legendary Chicago artists and longtime collaborators Mavis Staples + Jeff Tweedy closed out The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s week of live episodes following the Democratic National Convention from the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago with a performance of “Freedom Highway”, famously released by The Staple Singers on the album of the same name in 1965. Powerful and energetic, watch the performance at the link below.

Back in June, Staples released the R&B Prince-inspired track “Worthy”; as a black woman who lent her voice to the civil rights movement, the song vibrates through Mavis’s unique perspective as both a call to action and an infectious, dance-worthy tune. Breaking out on the radio right now, “Worthy” is Mavis’s first top 10 Adult Alternative Airplay hit as a solo artist, reaching #7 on the Mediabase Triple A Chart and #2 on the JBE Non-Comm Chart.
An uplifting song written and produced by Mark Ronson protégé MNDR and created by an all-women team, listen to it HERE. “It’s a pick-me-up song – it’s a celebration, and you can’t help but move,” Staples said of the song. “Certain songs just cover you, and this song is just so sassy and fire. It’s got me fired up.” All of her upcoming tour dates are listed below.
Jeff Tweedy will be touring the US this fall, including many cities throughout the country he hasn't played in years, and bookended by three-night residencies in Woodstock, NY and Menlo Park, CA. Prior to the fall tour, Tweedy will make two special appearances in the greater Chicagoland area in September: participating in an In-Conversation series at the Evanston Folk Festival and playing a solo music performance at Navy Pier’s Chicago Live! Details on all upcoming shows are available HERE.
Tweedy’s tour follows a busy several months for the Wilco frontman, including the release of his third book and New York Times Bestseller, WORLD WITHIN A SONG: Music That Changed My Life and Life That Changed My Music (Dutton), Wilco’s thirteenth studio album, Cousin, and the Hot Sun Cool Shroud EP via dBpm Records.
