The Principal, Council and St Andrew’s College community honour the life of Mungo Wentworth MacCallum (Fr 1959) who passed away on 9th December 2020.
Mungo resided at St Andrew's College from 1959-1961 whilst studying at the University of Sydney. However, Mungo was not the first MacCallum to come to Andrew's or the University. His father Mungo Ballardie MacCallum (Fr 1932), grandfather Mungo Lorenz MacCallum (Fr 1903) and great-uncle Brigadier
General Walter Paton (Fr 1914) were also residents of College, whilst his great grandfather, Sir Mungo William MacCallum, was the Chancellor of the University of Sydney from 1934 to 1936.
During his time at College, Mungo was a member of DramSoc and according to College records, in 1959 he ‘particularly distinguished himself’ in debating and was still the team’s ‘secret weapon’ in 1961. He contributed to the College's literary scene, writing reports on the 1959 DramSoc Committee as well as political discussions around such topics as Canberra and its censors, Royal tours, the Shell Company, Eisenhower and
God.
Mungo was born and raised in Sydney, and went on after College and university to have a distinguished career as a political journalist and commentator. You can read more about his life and career in the below article written by Kerry O'Brien for The Monthly:
