Staff updates

The Vegetable Research Roadshow is making its way down the country over May. Sarah Lester (Specialist Adviser Agricultural Chemical Regulation & Residues, ACVM), along with Claire Mills (Regional Manager, On Farm Support, MPI) and Daniel Sutton (Vegetables Research & Innovation) collaborated on a presentation about off-label use of agricultural chemicals for growers. Jan Roznawski (Specialist Systems Auditor, Systems Audit, MPI) also took the opportunity to attend the roadshow in Pukekohe, as it related to the recent audit on users' understanding and compliance with ACVM registration conditions. The roadshow will visit 10 vegetable growing regions.

AMR team update

The Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) team, in collaboration with the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR), hosted its first AMR Research Forum online on Monday, 28 April 2025.

We had an impressive turn out, with 65 attendees. Guest speakers included Associate Professor Ghader Bashiri (The University of Auckland), and Professor Jack Heinemann (Canterbury University), who provided an oversight of their research areas and discussed their vision for collaboration amongst AMR researchers in New Zealand and Australasia.

The forum provides a platform for AMR researchers to come together and discuss AMR research in New Zealand across all sectors. The aim of the forum is to foster collaboration, help inform research gaps and disseminate findings from existing research.

The AMR Research Forum will take place every two months. If you are interested in joining the forum, please contact the AMR team on AMRteam@mpi.govt.nz

Compliance update

ACVM compliance received 29 reports of potential or confirmed non-compliant ACVM products and activities in April, and 116 reports have been received to date:

Agricultural chemicals application update

As of 2 May, there were:

  • 35 applications in the queue
  • 55 applications in appraisal

In the queue, there are:

  • 20 new product applications (12 A-Type and 8 B-Type)
  • 11 new use or use change applications
  • 3 deviation application
  • 1 data assessment

There are no chemistry and manufacturing variation applications in the queue.

Veterinary medicine application update

As of 2 May, there were:

  • 32 applications in the queue
  • 121 applications in appraisal
  • 2 applications with the Animal Imports team for biosecurity approval

In the queue, there are:

  • 18 new product applications (10 A-Type and 8 B-Type)
  • 5 new use or use change applications
  • 9 chemistry and manufacturing variations

There are no deviation or data assessment applications in the queue.

The majority of the veterinary medicines assessments queue is composed of new product and use change applications (23 of 32 applications; 72%). The oldest application in the queue was due to complete technical evaluation on 3 December 2024, showing that the queue remains largely compact. The majority of applications (87%) have technical evaluation due dates between March and June 2025.

The team continues to prioritise the assessment of applications while incorporating other tasks, including progressing guidance document updates. The team still has one vacant position that is affecting the team’s overall capacity.

ACVM annual levy update reminder

As a critical part of New Zealand’s food safety system, New Zealand Food Safety provides a range of vital services to businesses to help manage risks to human and animal health. The costs of this have accumulated over time.

After consultation in 2024 with businesses with registered products under the ACVM Act, the Government agreed to update the ACVM annual levy with a stepped increase in July 2024 and again in July 2025. The increase reflects the cost of maintaining ACVM regulatory services.

This is a reminder that the annual levy will change to this stepped increase of $1,199 (excl GST) on 1 July 2025.

The levy applies to registered products under the ACVM Act. MPI notifies registration holders about reviewing and deregistering products each year. The cut-off date for requesting de-registration of products is Friday 13 June 2025.

If you hold a registration and would like to review or deregister products from MPI, or if you have any queries, please contact approvals@mpi.govt.nz.
