November 2021 No images? Click here As Newcastle emerges from lockdown, we're supporting the community to get out and enjoy the city in a variety of ways, from live music grants and support for major events to road-side gardens. Our ‘Locally Made and Played Grant’ program returns with funding available to showcase talented local artists and encourage venues to host live performances. Major events are proving to be the ticket to Newcastle’s economic success with broad support from residents and businesses. Each Supercars Newcastle 500 delivers an average $36.2 million in economic output and 149 jobs, according to global accountancy firm Ernst & Young. Green-thumbed residents are going to be given the opportunity to transform Newcastle's street verges into flourishing road-side gardens. A more attractive and accessible local centre is on its way for Shortland, as we're set to start construction on an upgrade to improve safety this month. As another challenging year draws to a close, we're calling for nominations for 2022 Citizen of the Year Awards to celebrate the strength, resilience and excellence of Novocastrians. Nominate someone today! And lastly, we'd like to say thank you for your support. Independent research shows community satisfaction with City of Newcastle has increased progressively since 2012, correlating with increased investment in capital works of almost 200% in the same period. There's more to come. Our city is just getting better every day. We've welcomed 500 new citizens this yearDespite changing COVID-19 restrictions impacting the traditional face-to-face ceremony format, we've gained 500 citizens in 2021, significantly reducing the waitlist for the Newcastle Local Government Area. The COVID-19 global pandemic has displaced many people in many different ways, be it through job losses or a reduction in work, illness, or separation from loved ones. Adapting our face-to-face citizenship ceremonies to online was a simple measure we could take to provide practical support to our new citizens at this challenging time. Newcastle's newest citizens hail from all corners of the globe, from Afghanistan and Iran to Sri Lanka and South Africa. We proudly welcome refugees and people of all cultural backgrounds, with 14% of Novocastrians born overseas and more than 14,000 speaking another language at home. In 2021, City of Newcastle has awarded Rapid Response Grants funding to Hunter Multicultural Communities to assemble welfare packs and produce a multilingual newsletter, as well as a combined $13,000 in Quick Response funding to STARTTS to assist in the organisation of the Unity and Diversity Festival, Afghan Community Festival, Congolese Community Festival, and Syrian Community Festival.
