Click here This year on World Mosquito Day (20 August), the WHO Global Malaria Programme is calling attention to the threat of Anopheles stephensi, a mosquito vector of malaria that thrives in urban settings and is resistant to many of the insecticides used in public health. Watch our new video on Anopheles stephensi in Africa and read about a WHO initiative to contain its spread. A new WHO report presents a state-by-state analysis of the malaria situation in Nigeria with a focus on population demographics, malaria interventions, climate and disease burden. Nigeria carries the highest burden of malaria globally, accounting for approximately 27% of malaria cases and 31% of malaria deaths in 2021. In recent years, the Global Malaria Programme has developed a series of preferred product characteristics (PPCs) to encourage innovation and guide the development of urgently needed health products. The latest PPCs focus on 2 types of tests to detect the risk of P. vivax malaria relapse. These PPCs are available for review and comment through 31 August 2023. To assess vector populations for the presence of insecticide resistance, WHO has developed an insecticide susceptibility test kit, produced and supplied by the Universiti Sains Malaysia. WHO is seeking feedback on the quality and ease of use of this test kit from individuals and/or institutions that regularly use this equipment. Experts from the WHO Vector Control Advisory Group (VCAG) met in a virtual meeting with product developers, innovators and researchers from 24–26 April 2023. This report details the proceedings and outcomes of the meeting, including advice provided to applicants working on bait stations, spatial repellents, systemic endectocide treatment, and reduction of pathogen transmission induced by Wolbachia. Following a request from its Member States at last year’s World Health Assembly, WHO is developing guidance on best practices for clinical trials. WHO is seeking inputs on the draft guidance from relevant stakeholders spanning all diseases and health conditions through a public consultation. The deadline for the submission of comments is 15 September 2023. |
