LIFEGUARD CLASS

April 4, 6 & 8, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Dear Future Team Member,

Are you looking for a fun job with flexible hours in a great atmosphere? The Mount Rainier Pool with funding from the Des Moines Legacy Foundation is offering free lifeguarding and swim instructor certifications this spring and summer. Our first free training will be a blended (online and in-person) learning Lifeguard Certification on April 4, 6 & 8. All participants must be committed to work at a pool in the Des Moines or Normandy Park area. Please see email below for other pre-requisites or email us for any questions.

All class members who complete the course will receive an American Red Cross Professional Lifeguard Certification. 

SPECIAL NOTE: This class is a blended class that also has online requirements. Ask staff for more information.

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding course teaches candidates the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare candidates to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries. Certification includes Lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid and AED for the professional rescuer.

COURSE PREREQUISITES

To enroll in the Lifeguarding course, you must be at least 15 years of age before the last scheduled class session. Please bring proof of age on the first day (driver's license, state identification, birth certificate, or passport).

To participate in the Lifeguarding course, you must be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  1. 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke
  2. 2-minute tread using legs only
  3. Retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 7 ft deep, surface and swim 20 yds with the weight, using legs only and exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds

Please bring a swimsuit and towel for the skills evaluation on the first day and for every class.

Note-if you cannot complete these tasks, please speak with Aquatics Manager, Quentin Knox about potential training time in the pool to work on these skills to take future trainings.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

All course materials are included.

COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS

100% attendance (no exceptions), 80% on the written exam, and successfully complete required skills and final skills scenarios.

COURSE CERTIFICATION

Upon successful completion of the Lifeguarding course, each participant will receive the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Lifeguard certification.
