A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Saying we live in challenging times is trite; the effects of COVID-19 are being felt everywhere including at IIT. In this newsletter, we are largely looking backwards, but future editions will be more engaged with how the crisis is affecting international trade cooperation, starting with some scheduled releases in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Professor Richard Pomfret’s reflections on the EU epicentre are required reading. But business must continue, albeit in new forms, and so we are shifting what we can online and leveraging ensuing opportunities. We have a lot to offer, as will be seen in this edition, including tailored courses, expert opinion, and structured teaching propositions. I wish all our readers the best of luck in navigating the ‘new normal’.

Professor Peter Draper

The EU has had a crisis-ridden decade with the sovereign debt, migration and Brexit crises. By the end of 2019, with the Greek debt crisis winding down, migration and refugees out of the headlines and Brexit done, skies looked clearer for the new Commission under Ursula von der Leyen and the new head of the European Central Bank (ECB) Christine Lagarde. However, as the current epicentre of the COVID-19 epidemic, Europe faces a new challenge which will test its institutional resilience.

OUR MOST READ PIECE

On 31 January 2020 Britons celebrated or mourned the UK’s departure from the European Union.  Brexit will be followed by a transition period until the end of the current EU budget cycle on 31 December 2020.  During the transition, the UK will continue to adhere to EU rules while managing the practicalities of Brexit. A number of questions arise: what goals are top of the wish list for the Johnson government during this transition; how feasible are these goals in light of the EU27 position; and what might the long-term consequences of Brexit be for the UK?

#THEOPINION

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include gender equality, not only as one of the 17 goals but also embedded in other goals, particularly Goal 8: “Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all”.
International trade agreements have an important role to play towards achieving gender equality as part of a framework for sustainable and inclusive socio-economic growth.
