Teacher development was the name of the game at a recent provincial capacity building workshop in KwaZulu-Natal. Education specialists and district information technology officers gathered on 18 July to learn more about the digital tools they could be using to support their work. Seen above are DDD’s Bongekile Hlela and School Principal, Mr Mkhize, sharing key learnings on the use of DDD for real-time education insights. |

NEW TECH: TAKE TIME, TO SAVE TIME |
|
|
|
For many education officials, time is the scarcest resource. Taking time out to learn new tech (like features on the DDD Dashboard) might therefore feel unrealistic, especially when it eats into your already full schedule.
However, training is an investment that can repay itself many times over. DDD reduces the most time-consuming tasks – compiling reports, tracking learner progress, identifying where to focus efforts – into a few clicks. Clear, visual summaries are available instantly, and accurate, up-to-date data in one place means less stress from missing information or last-minute errors. Planning and meetings become faster and more focused, leaving more time for what matters most: working directly with learners.
Being skeptical of new tech is not new. Consider these now-ironic quotes:
• “The telephone has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication.” Western Union internal memo, 1876
• “Television won’t hold on to any market ... People will get tired of staring at a box every night.” Darryl Zanuck, 20th Century Fox, 1946
• “There’s no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.” Ken Olsen, founder of Digital Equipment Corporation, 1977
• “Electronic mail is a gimmick.” US Postal Service, 1978
• “The Internet is a passing fad.” Bill Gates, 1995
Rest assured – adopting new features on the DDD Dashboard could reclaim hours you never thought possible. Plus, it sends a powerful message: that you are adaptable, forward-thinking, and committed to using every available tool to improve outcomes! Why wait? Book your next training session today! |

FINDING YOUR NORTH STAR: Let data lead the way |
|
|
|
Tshwane North is a data-led district through and through. And for District Director, Thea Coetser, the DDD Dashboard has become a vital tool for improving learner performance. “When we analyse data on the Learner Chart Report, we focus on two things specifically… Grade 12 learner data, as well as the Grade 11 data,” she explains.
By looking closely at Grade 11 results, her team can identify learners failing two or more subjects and consider subject changes in consultation with parents. This early intervention gives learners a better chance in their matric year. For Grade 12 learners, the focus is on progressed learners and those struggling during mid-year exams. “We look at those who might have to drop one subject in order to pass six of the stronger subjects,” says Coetser. “In that way, we ensure a matric pass.”
The dashboard also proves useful in primary schools. The School Achievement Report shows performance per subject and grade, and sometimes flags unusual patterns. “Instead of the normal bell curve, we get a lot of data skewed towards levels 5 and 7,” Coetser notes. On visiting schools, her team often finds that teacher-assisted assessments or extended testing periods have contributed to this – insight that ultimately helps to ensure fair and accurate evaluation.
For Coetser, the value of the DDD Dashboard is clear: it turns raw data into practical action. “In that way, we can ensure our learners are supported to achieve in the end,” she says. |
