Links eNewsletter - Term 2 Week 6 Dear valued member of the PLC community, A Message From the Deputy PrincipalThis week, I have been reflecting on leadership and the kind of leadership we want to see in our students as they grow into young leaders of the future. In his article featured in the Harvard Business Review, ‘If Humility Is So Important, Why Are Leaders So Arrogant?’, Bill Taylor coins the word “humbition” to describe the ideal leadership style that is one part humility and one part ambition.
While ego and overconfidence get attention, modesty works. I give full credit to our outstanding Head Prefect, Edwina Mactier, and Deputy Head Prefect, Sophya Thomas, for leading the School with “humbition” this year and enacting their vision with unassuming purposefulness. In these roles, self-leadership is essential as it allows a leader to build team capacity and inspire buy-in from others. As we head into the Inter-House Athletics Carnival and House Choir and House Dance rehearsals for Arts Day, student leadership is front and centre. It is such a pleasure seeing our Year 12 students, whether they have formal leadership positions or not, keenly stepping forward and embracing the opportunity to lead others. Their enthusiasm, fairness, and ability to galvanise their Houses shows these students being their best selves. As leaders or aspiring leaders, the question we should keep asking ourselves is, “am I courageous enough to stay humble?” - Chris Robinson – Deputy Principal Leadership and ServiceOver the course of this week, the Junior School leaders have been busy liaising and working with Senior School students. The cross-campus connections have opened discussions about authentic action projects that will support our community while developing important leadership skills and mentoring opportunities for our Junior School students. During our Monday briefing, I asked the staff if they had taken a risk over the course of the week. They did not need to share their endeavours, but from the unresponsive faces staring back at me, few thought that they had. With a long weekend ahead, I do hope that everyone finds the time to be open-minded in trying something new and taking that risk, be it a small change or a bolder attempt at new experiences or way of thinking and doing. I also hope that you find the space to take time to rest, read, and reflect. Our staff will be spending Friday at school preparing for the remainder of this term. We, like so many other workplaces, have had to deal with the impact of illness. It has not been an easy time, but I would like to thank the staff and all community members for their understanding, flexibility, and support during this period. Free Dress DayThursday 2 JuneToday, students enjoyed dressing up as ‘someone who inspires them’ for Free Dress Day. Staff and students took on the challenge in all manner of fun, creative, and passionate ways. Funds raised from the event support our two World Vision sponsored children, Margaret (11) from Kenya and Josephine (12) from Zambia with the surplus going to other PLC supported charities. Winter UniformNext week we return to our winter uniform for all Senior School students.
RAT DistributionThis week RAT tests have been distributed to our students in Years 10, 11, and 12. Next week students in Years 7, 8, and 9 will receive their government issued box of 20 RAT tests. Our Boarding students in these year groups will have their tests distributed directly by/from the Health Centre. Any students who are absent on the date of collection will have the opportunity to collect their RAT tests from either the McNeil Street or View Street Reception areas. Social MediaThe use of social media is a key part of many young people’s social interactions. While social media has many benefits, it is important that all individuals are also reminded of the need to be good digital citizens. At PLC, we have a curriculum in place which addresses key aspects of what this looks like at different developmental stages. We place an emphasis on teaching students to be upstanders and to report any behaviour that they believe is unkind or inappropriate. For parents looking to support their daughters, the eSafety Commission has many resources that you are able to access. I wanted to share these resources to help enable these conversations about digital citizenship to continue outside of school as well. For more information, please visit the PLC/Scotch online safety hub by clicking the button below. Room of the Week:
A Break is NighAlthough energies have been running high as the girls get back into all the schools recreation calendar with outings to the movies, bonfires at Scotch College, games nights with Wesley College at PLC, and even a trip to Laser Dome, it is safe to say that our girls are well and truly ready for their well-earned Mid-Term Break. This term so far, our girls have achieved so much with the Year 11 and 12 students getting through their first semester exams and various work placements, the Year 7 students embarking on quay2quay, the Year 8 boarders challenging their physical and mental boundaries on their Outdoor Education Programme, the Year 9 boarding students harnessing their teamwork and leadership skills in the Year 9 Service Leadership Programme, and the Year 10 cohort making big decisions about subject selections for Year 11. We would also like to acknowledge the achievements of our Year 12 Leaders who absolutely shone during National Boarding Week. This week, our Gorna Liyarn girls and Reconciliation Captains, Jasmine Walter and Montanna Reidy, have worked tirelessly to make Reconciliation Week informative, engaging, and deeply meaningful. We are immensely proud of the achievements of our Boarding Community in only a short 6 weeks. With that in mind, it is so important that our girls take this weekend to rest, pace themselves, and connect with loved ones, a sentiment just as relevant for our amazing team of staff. We wish everyone in our Boarding community a restful weekend and eagerly await their return on Monday afternoon. Take care, - Susie Edwards – Director of Boarding, and Katherine Hazlewood - Deputy of Wellbeing and Pastoral Care. Birthing Kits Service Opportunity Year 7 – 11This is the fourth year that PLC is participating in Birthing Kits for Australia (BKFA) Project led by IB CAS students. In 2022, it will be led by Year 11 students, Izi Harrold, and Kavita Bisht. Birthing kits are small packages containing seven fundamental items for women in developing countries to have a safe and sanitary birth. The not-for-profit NGO offer volunteers to either donate or build birthing kits, which BKFA then send to particular countries around the world that are less economically developed and have high maternal mortality rates due to unsanitary births. The organisation’s goal aligns directly with the UN’s Goal #3: Good Health & Wellbeing - By 2030, reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births. If your child is interested in participating in this project on Wednesday 10 August
There are only 40 spots available, therefore it’s a first-in, first-serve basis! If you do not manage or are unable to take part in this project, but you still want to get involved with the organisation, then you can either donate directly to BKFA or arrange your own Birthing Kit Assembly Day at home. Holiday Programmes at PLCCode Camp School Holiday ProgrammePLC is hosting a three day Code Camp Holiday Programme for students aged 7-13. OCA Art Exhibition Artist Registration InvitationThe OCA is thrilled to confirm the 2022 OCA Art Exhibition, originally scheduled for May, will now be held from Friday 26 August to Sunday 28 August. This popular annual event continues to be a celebration of the creativity and vitality of the Arts within the PLC community and the OCA committee warmly invites artists from our PLC and OCA community to register to be part of this year's Exhibition. Dance Showcase - I AmJoin the PLC dancers at this year's Dance Showcase titled I Am. With three shows taking place, it is looking to be another spectacular show.
How would you complete the sentence “I am…”? Identity refers to how one describes the self but is so much more than a list of variables. It is a personally constructed understanding of who we are. Identity for dancers is embedded in the body, performance, training, aspirations, and messages of the dance culture with all its trimmings. I Am is not just a showcase of the skill of PLC’s dancers but also a glimpse into their journey as artists and how dance forms a unique part of who they are and what they feel. Amelia and Courtney Making MovesCongratulations to Amelia Falconer (Year 6) and Courtney Van Ingen-Kal (Year 8) who have recently been selected in the Testing Ground Dance Company. Only eighteen school-aged dancers’ from across the country were selected to be part of the youth contemporary dance company. Through simulating a company dance environment, Testing Ground has been established to bridge the gap between student and professional dancers. Their mission is not only to build the skills necessary to propel young artists into the industry, but to authentically emulate the intricacies of company life. On Sunday 29 May, they performed their showcase, “The Human Condition”at the Perth State Theatre, which expressed different human emotions through dance. Well done to our talented dancers!
