Dear friend, Last week's winter weather brought considerable challenges, including power outages, icy conditions, burst pipes, and fallen trees, severely impacting our community. Unfortunately, these difficulties hit hardest for those with fewer resources, like the individuals we assist at Lift UP. While many can prepare for storms by stocking up on groceries and finding alternative accommodations in case of power loss, these options aren't available to everyone. Our clients, often unable to afford these luxuries, depend on the food provided by Lift UP and our partner organizations. At Lift UP, deciding whether to close Preston's Pantry or stop food box deliveries is tough. We strive to balance minimizing disruption for our community with ensuring the safety of our staff and volunteers. Last week, we received numerous inquiries about our operating hours and delivery status. Many clients were even prepared to brave the harsh weather for a chance to get food, highlighting the crucial role we, along with our partners, volunteers, and donors, play in ensuring food accessibility. At Lift UP, we believe that access to healthy food is a fundamental right. No one should have to rely solely on us to meet their nutritional needs. Knowing the importance of the food we provide, last Thursday, thanks to our dedicated team, the Apple Volunteer Group, and volunteer Steve Cromer – we delivered 54 food boxes. Our client interactions, like CaSaundra Johnson's experience delivering to a food-insecure individual in Helen Swindell's unable to navigate icy sidewalks due to disability, are a constant reminder of our mission's importance. “I'm so happy to see you! I was near the end of my food,” she said. Imagine if those in need had sufficient SNAP benefits to stock their pantries or afford grocery delivery, just like many of us. With the rise in state-wide food insecurity, more people are facing this issue for the first time. You can make a difference, whether you're personally affected by food insecurity or simply wish to help. Email Govenor Tina Kotek and tell her we need Food for All Oregonians. Volunteer with us. Our work relies heavily on the consistent efforts of our volunteers who ensure our neighbors have access to food. Donate funds. Every $10 donation provides 7 meals. With last week's closures, we anticipate a higher demand at Preston’s Pantry. Your financial support is crucial. Consider being a soup-er hero and host a soup food drive. After the success of our Nut Butter Drive, we're excited about the potential impact of a soup drive. A special thanks to Trinity Episcopal Church whose recent drive inched us near 8,000 jars of nut butter for our neighbors! We're immensely grateful to our supportive community that enables the Lift UP team to provide nourishing food to those who deserve it. With Gratitude, Stephanie Barr, Executive Director Food brings us together. |
