Seasonal shifts, such as switching to fall bedcovers and taking an extra jacket along, remind me that this external seasonal change from pitta to vata dominant, induces our internal focus on harvest, putting away and putting up (storing) for another coming winter. Turtlenecks and rubber soles are now ‘in season’, as we prepare for winter. Mindfulness practices during the mornings now are a true anchor for each day’s unfolding with a feeling of being ‘present’ throughout the day. Being ready to take advantage of opportunities means having a balance of commitments and space with no commitments. Do you schedule a time for yourself to simply do ‘nothing’? Fall is a time for conscious adaptation to change, so give yourself a little time to notice and nourish your intentionality, OK? Rest cannot be replaced with herbs, exercise, etc. This is the longest school semester of the year and for many, the season of our greatest work efforts in the world. Thoughtful preparation for each day is time well invested in avoidance of mishap and doubt, which can increase Vata dosha and therefore safe and successful outcomes. Abhyanga or self-massage using warm oil can be very balancing for Vata dosha, now increased in the northern hemisphere as autumn. A daily warm oil self- massage about 45 minutes, while doing gentle stretching and breathing practices can help enhance nourishment, groundedness, immunity, thermal balance, cheerfulness, and endurance. All that for very little investment in self-care, especially when integrated with yoga and pranayama! Avoid soap to help encourage absorption of the oil-based nutrients and properties. Abhyanga practice is one of the most helpful from Ayurveda for westerners I feel and pays rich dividends of rejuvenation, easy elimination, and sound sleep. Self-massage, as all lifestyle practices, is to be individually tailored for enhancing each one’s doshic status, according to Ayurveda. If unsure, please check with your experienced local practitioner to understand what’s best for you at present. This coming year, please join us for various opportunities for self-healing, learning and spreading the joys and freedoms of Ayurveda to your friends and family.

This represents a golden opportunity to engage digitally in support of the integration of eastern and western stakeholders in global health. “Mr. Sharad Marathe, Chairman, AYUSH Task Force, Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, said “Revitalizing the AYUSH sector, with its rich repository of knowledge and practices, can make India a global leader in integrative healthcare in the 21st century. After the worldwide success of Yoga, it is time for AYUSH to make its mark globally through increased focus on scientific research, development, protocols and scalable models. Creatively leveraging social media can bring together the global resources of all kinds and snowball a revolution in the fastest time frame. The new platform should take this on as a mission. We are delighted that AYUSH Global is aiming to connect all interested stakeholders globally to create awareness, develop science further and build confidence in the vast knowledge base that goes back to over 5000 years.” The task force was set up by the Indian Government’s AYUSH Ministry to develop an action-oriented strategy and implementation roadmap on a fast track basis. Mr. Marathe added, “The goal of AYUSH Global should be to build a community of at least one million stakeholders by August 15, 2020.” To read the full document, please click here. Dhanvantari Jayanti is now celebrated each year during October, drawing attention within India and internationally to the importance of these ancient and well-documented systems of medicine, equally relevant today as in ancient times. The emphasis of Ayurveda and yoga is on Nature herself as the storehouse of all knowledge, medicinal substances and answers to human suffering. Prevention of imbalance and later possible ‘disease’ is the purpose of Ayurveda and related natural sciences. According to tradition, Sri Dhanvantari is considered as the lord of healing. Dhanvantari’s birthday is chosen to celebrate Ayurveda Day, falling 2 days before Divali. Dhanvantari is considered as an incarnation of Vishnu, the sustainer principle of the universe, indicating the importance of prevention of symptoms. Ayurveda is a complete science of prevention, and as such, represents the most comprehensive approach for healthy living, to prevent and manage all disease, including inherited conditions, mental health, and environmental wellness through the theory of the PanchaMahaBhutas or five great constructing elements of the creation. Let us celebrate together on Oct. 25, whether with puja (devotional ceremony at sunrise), healthy luncheon feasting with community, or simply dedicating your walk to the health of the planet and each individual. Some are planning educational events and a special self-care day. What is your plan to acknowledge the advent of Ayurveda into your life? Personally, I’m inclined to all these ways to connect with the heritage of all those many souls who have protected and maintained the precious knowledge of the Science of Life, now available to us today, thanks to so many over the last 10,000 years of history (WHO statement). * * * WORD OF WISDOM A disciple of asked the Master, ‘How should I behave toward others?’ Master replied, ‘There are no others’.
