Cr Karen Pensabene, Mayor of Strathfield

Dear Residents,

Anzac Day is an important opportunity to join together, remember and recognise more than 1.5 million service men and women who have served our country in all conflicts, wars and peacekeeping operations. It's also a time to remember over 103,000 Australians who sacrificed their lives in our country's name.

This year we pay special tribute to the approximately 3,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who served during WWII. Although they were not recognised as Australian citizens, these Indigenous peoples were willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for this country.

Despite their bravery, when they returned home, they were rarely treated as heroes, with their actions going unrecognised for many years. There is now much more information available on Indigenous service, and a good place to start is the Australian War Memorial. I encourage everyone to lean about their important contribution.

Lest we forget.

If you need to contact me or have any questions, please do so by emailing me cr.kpensabene@strathfield.nsw.gov.au or ring our office on 9748 9999

THROWBACK THURSDAY

Flight Sergeant Geoffrey James Dunbar

As we commemorate Anzac Day, we remember one WWII Strathfield serviceman who did not return home. Flight Sergeant Geoffrey Dunbar, aged 22, of 91 The Boulevarde, Strathfield was serving with 467 Squadron when he lost his life on a training mission in England on 3 January 1945.

All seven crew members were killed when their Avro Lancaster plane hit a rocky outcrop while descending in bad weather. Before enlisting, Dunbar had completed two years of an economics degree and was employed with the Rural Bank of NSW. He is buried in Blacon Cemetery near Chester.

Lest We Forget.
