Click here 25 April 2024Cr Karen Pensabene, Mayor of Strathfield Dear Residents, Anzac Day is an important opportunity to join together, remember and recognise more than 1.5 million service men and women who have served our country in all conflicts, wars and peacekeeping operations. It's also a time to remember over 103,000 Australians who sacrificed their lives in our country's name. This year we pay special tribute to the approximately 3,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who served during WWII. Although they were not recognised as Australian citizens, these Indigenous peoples were willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for this country. Despite their bravery, when they returned home, they were rarely treated as heroes, with their actions going unrecognised for many years. There is now much more information available on Indigenous service, and a good place to start is the Australian War Memorial. I encourage everyone to lean about their important contribution.
