5 March 2026

Dear Residents,

Thank you to the SES team who were out in the flooded streets of Strathfield last Friday night, keeping everyone safe. Council staff also worked into the night to clear the roads, with the street sweeper out cleaning away debris, ensuring that by the time the sun rose, Strathfield streets were clean and safe. Thank you team!

Seniors Festival for 2026 is underway! The festival celebrates the role and contributions of older adults to our local communities, and is a great time to get out and about and celebrate you. From golf to yoga to music, there is something for everyone at Strathfield Council Seniors events. Visit the website to register.

Council’s International Women’s Day event is tomorrow, Friday 6 March, and will now begin at 1pm. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there to celebrate women and raise awareness for women and girls-centric issues. If you have registered but can no longer make it, please let us know by emailing communications@strathfield.nsw.gov.au.

If you need to contact me or have any questions, please do so by emailing me cr.bcai@strathfield.nsw.gov.au or ring our office on 9748 9999.

A friendly reminder to dog owners

Residents are reminded that dog owners are legally responsible for cleaning up after their pets in all public places, including footpaths, parks and nature strips.

Leaving dog waste behind creates health risks, environmental impacts and an unpleasant experience for others in our community. Under New South Whales regulations, failure to immediately remove dog waste from a public place may result in an on-the-spot fine of $275.

Please carry dog poo bags when walking your dog and dispose of them appropriately. Responsible pet ownership helps keep our shared spaces clean, safe and respectful for everyone.

The Barefoot Bushwalker: Dorothy Butler

March is Women's History Month - so let's learn all about a local resident who climbed all over the world!

The intrepid ‘barefoot bushwalker’ Dorothy Butler (née English) was born in 1911 and attended Homebush Public School. In 1936 Dot and Dr Eric Dark were the first to scale Crater Bluff in the Warrumbungles. Dorothy climbed all over the world, becoming a mountain guide in New Zealand where she taught a young Edmund Hillary. In 1943 she cycled to Melbourne from Sydney to marry Ira Butler when she couldn’t get a seat on a train. She scaled the Sydney Harbour Bridge several times illegally, including on its opening day in 1932. In 1992 she abseiled down it, aged 80.
